Review ( Month of October '10)

On 31st October 2010 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. V. Varsha presented a very good vocal concert at VDS. This is her maiden solo performance. She is very confident at 16. Voice is fine. It is modulation and sweet in the higher octave. She renders kritis neatly. Guru Nandhini Shankar has trained her very well.

She sang padavini in slaka bhairavi well. Sub main gamganapathe was too short. Main shankarabharanam was fine. After a neat alapana she sang the kriti enduku peddala well. Niraval and kalpanaswaram was o.k. She sang the thukkadas melodiously.

Shraddha (Violin) and P.V. Srivatsa (Mridangam) gave a very good support.

At 7.15 PM . That was R. Supraja direct induction to senior slot to one and half hour concert at VDS. She justified the selection by her fine Manodharma and all round knowledge. That was an excellent concert for debutant. Her gurus Meera Kedarnathan and Nandhini Shankar have trained her very well.

Jalandarasu peetasthe in valachi was very good. Alapana was nice and she rendered the kriti & swaram very well. Main kalyani was fine; alapana has innovative pidis. She rendered the kriti nithichala with ragalakshana and in proper bhava. Niraval and kalpanaswaram had variety. She sang muralidhara in mand beautifully.

Shraddha Ravindran on Violin and K.R. Narayan on mridangam gave very good support to Supraja.

On 24th October 2010 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. B. Ramaa's first performance was excellent, high standard and bold approach in front of a large number of audiences. Her voice is bold, clear and versatile, especially in the higher octave. She sings the kritis neatly and her paatantharam also very good and well trained by her Guru Lakshmi Krishnaswami.

Her panthuvaralai was very good. She did the alapana and swaram very well. Main shankarabharanam was very good. The alapana has some good pidis. She rendered the kriti sarojadhalanethri very well. Niraval and kalpanaswaram were good. Muthaipu swaram was well executed. Ramaa rendered the thukkadas melodiously.

M. K. Ananthalakshmi (Violin) and B. Sai Shankar (Mridangam) gave a very good support.

Chief Guest of the evening Vidhushi Dr. M.A. Bhagirathi. HOD, music dept. Queen Maris College blessed the children.

At 7.15 PM . That was yet another excellent vocal concert by R. Swathi, grand daughter and dis. of Thirupunthurithi S. Venkatesan. She is also learning under the tutelage of Chenglepet Ranganathan. She is regular artiste of VDS; this is her 7th concert here. Her manodharma and all knowledge are improving year by year. Voice is bold, clear and versatile.

She rendered all the kritis neatly bringing out the ragalakshana. Thaye thirubura in suddha saveri was rendered well. Panthuvarali was good. Swaram was spontaneous. Main shankarabhranam was fine. The alapana was sowkiyam-with good pidis. She rendered the kriti swara raga sudha well. Niraval and kalpanaswaram were good. The lone thukkada in hamsanandhi was delivered melodiously.

R. Shyam on Violin and R. Santhoshram on mridangam gave fine support to Swathi.

On 23rd October 2010 (Saturday) at 6.00 P.M. We congrats R. Sowmitri for a good vocal performance at VDS. This is her maiden concert. Her voice is good, bold and clear. Rendering the krithis neatly. Guru Sakunthala Seshadri has trained her very well.

She sang the kalyani kriti yevara madugathura very well. Main Shanmugapriya was good. Alapana was neat. She sang the kriti mayai agala margam very well and kalpanaswaram was good though looked tutored. She sang the lone tukkada nicely.

Accompanists T.V. Sukanya (Violin) and Vaibhav Raghavan (Mridangam) gave very good support.

Chief guest Vidhushi Smt. Abhirama Sundari, prof. music dept. Queen Maris College , blessed the children.

7.15 PM. V. Supraja performed her yet another excellent vocal concert at VDS. This is her first promotional concert for senior slot. Her all round knowledge is good and fine rendition in spite of limitations in her voice split and limited songs.

Guru Raji Gopalakishanan has trained Supraja very well.

She sang nattai kurinji kriti neatly. Vanchathonuna in karna ranjani was fine. Main shanmugapriya was fine; the alapana has some nice pidis. She rendered the kriti Thiyagarajars vadanevari very well. Niraval and kalpanaswaram were good. Viutham in sahana was excellent. We could see the essence of the raga in it. She sang the thukkadas well.

R. Shyam (Violin) and T. Karthik (mridangam) gave very good support.

On 22nd October 2010 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. Malleshwar Sastry @ just 13 is very confident. His over all knowledge is good. He sings kritis neatly. Guru Lakshmi Krishnaswami has trained him very well. This is his fine & very good maiden vocal concert.

He sang manasa etulo in malayamarutham very well. Hiranmayim is a difficult kriti. He sang the piece perfectly. Though the mohanam alapana was short he rendered the kriti Raja gopalam very well. Swaram was o.k. Main Poorvikalyani alapana was very good. His niraval and kalpanaswaram also very good for kriti Enneramum. He sang the thukkadas neatly. Selections of the songs for the concert were good and it had variety.

M.K. Ananthalashmi (Violin) and Guru Aravind (Mridangam) gave a very good support to Malleshwar.

Veena Vidwan Sri S. Srinivasan, chief guest of the evening blessed the budding artistes.

On 17th October 2010 (Sunday) at 7.00 P.M. R. P. Shravan performed his excellent vocal concert for VDS. This is his second performance. Now his voice is matured and he has beautiful base voice. His musical knowledge is good. Manodharma also very good. Guru Padma Sandilyan has trained him very well.

His sub-main Pandhuvarali alapana was very good for kriti shobaname. Main Bhairavi alapana was fine for kriti thaaye ezhayai pol. Niraval and kalpanaswaram had variety and also in detailed. He sang the thukkadas beautifully with his fine base voice. His gamakas and brigas were good in the behag thillana and also in karpagame kann paarai.

Accompanists K.J. Dileep (Violin) and V. Gowrishankar (Mridangam) gave a fine support.

On 09th October 2010 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. Srirangam Sisters S. Sujitha & S. Madhuvanthi presented a very good vocal duet in VDS. They are quite confident. Voice is bold, clear and singing in one voice. Their thalam exposition was good. Guru Sakunthala Seshadri has trained them very well.

We thank the large number of audience for encouraging the budding artistes. The sisters sang the rather difficult kamas; tharu varnam very well. Suddha saveri kriti; Sri guru guha was sung well. Himagiri in sudha dhanyasi was rendered correctly. Main kalyani was very good. Alapana and kalpanaswaram were like tutored. Kalpanaswaram had variety. They sang the ragamalika thukkada melodiously.

M. Jwalini (Violin) and K. Arvind Shankar (Mridangam) gave a very good support.

Mr. S.A. Ramesh Rangan, GM (MID CORPORATE), SBI, who is also musician and Retd. DGM Mr. G.S. Subramanian, SBI chief guests of the programme has blessed the young artistes.

At 7.15 PM . That was Thiruparkadal S. Vasudevan a grand son of the violin exponent of yester years late Thiruparkadal S. Veeraraghavan. It is difficult to believe it is his first concert was excellent. His over all knowledge is high-it has to be-because he hails from Thiruparkadal family – right from Srinivasa Iyengar, Veeraraghavan and Rajamani. He is learning music from Chembai C.R. Vaidyanathan and school of the grate PSN.

His saveri was good. He sang the kriti karikalabamugam nicely with ragalakshana. Main kalyani was very good. Alapana has innovative pidis. He rendered the kriti pankajalochana very well. Kalpanaswaram had variety. He rendered the thukkadas neatly.

Little M.K. Ananthalakshmi on Violin and V. Shreyas on mridangam gave very good support to Vasudevan.

Sangeetha Kala Acharya, Sangeetha Choodamani Sri. P.S. Narayanaswami chief guest of the concert blessed the artistes.

On 03rd October 2010 (Sunday) at 6.00 P.M. Padmashree Balaji and Baghyashree Balaji performed very good vocal duet for VDS. They have bold and clear voice. They render krithis well. Guru Padma Sandilyan has trained them very well.

Pandhuvarali kriti ninnenera was sung very well. They sang thaaye thiruburua sundari very well. Main Karaharapriya was good. Sang the kriti pakkala nilapadi very well and kalpanaswaram was good. Selections of the items were good and had variety. Madhuvanthi thillana has sung nicely.

Accompanists Shraddha (Violin) and Santhoshram (Mridangam) gave very good support.

7.15 PM. R. Kavya performed her yet another excellent vocal concert at VDS. One of the senior most artistes in VDS, this is her 11th concert in as many years. She is an all rounder and has performed vocal, veena and dance.

Her concert was marked by a good manodharma, over all knowledge, a good voice with proper gamakas and brugas. She sang devibrova in chintamani ragam very well. Main charukesi was fine. The alapana had nice pidis. She rendered the kriti krupaya paalaya very well. Her kalpanaswaram had variety. She sang the lone thukkada gandhiyaippol well.

Shrraddha (Violin) and G. Karthik (mridangam) gave a fine support.

On 02nd October 2010 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. Neharika Rajagopal & Krithika Rajagopal presented a very good vocal duet in VDS. First of all, we would like to appreciate the young sisters performing with full of confidence before a large number of audience. Though their voice is difference, they united very well to sing in one voice which is appealing. The combined voice is melodious and effective. They sang the kritis very well. Guru Dr, Subashini Parthasarathi has trained them well.

The kaanada kriti was sung very well. Sub-main shanmugapriya was o.k.; kriti kannanai pani maname was good. They sang the mohanam kriti Rajagopalam bajeham nicely with fine niraval and swaram. They sang the thukkadas neatly and melodiously. Selections of the songs for the concert were good and it had variety.

Vantematharam song was ideal for the Gandhi jayanthi day.

Guru Raghav (Violin) and T. Karthik (Mridangam) gave a very good support.

At 7.15 PM. Padma Sandilyan's yet another student Anjana Thirumalai aquitted her self with an excellent vocal concert, which was marked by a good all round knowledge, a good manodharma and very good paatantharam.

This is her second concert at VDS and her first promotional concert for senior slot, she deserved it. She sang all the kritis well – special mention can be made about Lathangi and Sriranjani. Lathangi was fine. Alapana had nice pidis, kalpanaswaram was spontaneous for kriti Patnam Subramani Iyers Marivera deekivo. Main mohanam alapana had imaginative pidis for kriti evaroora. Kalpanaswaram had variety. She sang the tukkadas melodiously-shanthi nilava vendum being apt for October 2nd.

Accompanists Sriram Sridhar on Violin and V. Prashanth on mridangam gave a fine support to Anjana.
