Review ( Month of October '08)

On 25th October 2008 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. R. P. Darshan of Coimbatore gave  a very good  vocal concert for VDS. This is his third concert. His voice is now settling after break at 16. His confidence is good, padanthram also good. Learning under the tutelage of Mr. Kannan of Coimbatore.

 Shankarabaranam (Varnam), Varavallabha (Hamsadwani), Sudha Mayie (Amirtha Varshini) were rendered nicely. Sub-main Thodi was good, alapana was very short. Main Kalyani, though the alapana was short he rendered  Papanasam Sivan’s Unnai Allal kriti nicely. The pidis were good. Still he has to improve alapana.

M.S. Ananthashree ( Violin) and Sree Seshadri Vyas (Mridangam) gave good support to Darshan.

At 7.15 PM. T. Kalaimagan’s excellent vocal concert was marked by manly bold, clear and versatile voice. He sings with proper gamakas and raagalakshana. He has improved in all departments in the past two years; guru Nagamani Nagaraju has trained him very well. Of course he is born in a artist family and grand son of Villupaatu famous Padmashree Subbu Arumugam.

His Sub-main Karaharapriya was good. He rendered the kriti Sendhil Andavan very nicely with nice kalpanaswarams.  Swagatham Krishna (Mohanam) was rendered beautifully. Main Kalyani was fine. After a neat alapana he rendered the kriti Yevaramadugudura with well knit niraval and swarams. Both the raga alapanas were terminated at higher octave and one could have been extended up to lower sadjamam for variety. He sang the thukkadas Ennakavi Padinalum, Mythrimbajatha and Brindavana saranga Thillana very attractively.

He got fine support from violinist H.U. Raghuram and  Mridangist G. Krithivasan and Gatam by V. Prashanth.

Chief Guest: Veenai Sri. Kannan (niece of Padma Shri Dr. Padma Subramaniam) blessed the artists.

On 19th October 2008 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. R. Vignesh gave yet another excellent vocal concert for VDS. Learning under Saroja Balasubramaniam. He  is our regular artist and this is his third consecutive excellent concert. His saariram is bold, clear and childish.

Confidence is high for his age eleven.

He started with Thodi varnam  followed by Vaaranam mukhava, Jagada nandakaraka all rendered very well. His Hindolam alapana – he has to perfect it, kriti Deekshidar’s Saraswathi Vidiyuvati was good. Main Kalyani was fine, short but neat alapana he sang the kriti Vasudhevayani very well with good kalapana swarams. One plus point is he is singing with full involvement.

Shraddha Ravindran (Violin), P.V. Srivathsa (Mridangam) and  S. Krishna (Gatam) rendered their fine support.

Chief Guest : Bhagavathulu Sri. Seetharama Sharma, a faculty member of Kalakshetra for both Vocal and Bharathanatyam blessed the children.

At 7.15 PM. K. Revathy’s Excellent vocal concert was marked by all round knowledge fine rendering of kritis in her sweet, melodious and easy flowing voice with modest and elegant singing. She was under the tutelage of Late Sulochana Pattabiraman and K. Vijaya. Presently she is ably guided by P. Vasanthkumar.

Her Swathi Thirunal’s Deva Deva ( Mayamala Gowla) was good, after a compact display of alapana, niraval and swarams. Main kambodi was fine. Alapana was very good with nice pidis and developed step by step methodically. She rendered the kriti koniyadi very well. She reminded us of N. C. Vasantha Kokilam during the kriti. The niraval was o.k. Kalpana Swarams had variety with well execulted muthaaipu.

She got fine support from violinist H.U. Raghu Ram ( dis. of Lalgudi) and  Mridangist Thalaignayiru S.Harish Kumar ( dis. of Umayalpuram).

On 18th October 2008 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. S. H Raaghav’s fine and very good  veena concert was marked by fine rendering of kritis and swarams. Tonal quality was good. Sruthi, layam and confidence were very good. Learning under the tutelage of Dr. Kamala Ashwathama. Our regular artist and this is his third concert for VDS.

His Vinayaka (Hamsadwani), Adamodi kalada (Charukesi), Devadideva (Sunada vinodini) were rendered nicely. Sub-main Thodi was good, after a good alapana he played Brindavana very well. Main Hindolam (RTP) Papanasam Sivan’s Samaganalola was very nice. Master piece of the programme was Bho Sambho, played very nicely   

Little S. Aswini (Mridangam; dis.of Dr. T.K.Murthy) and  S. Sri Sainath (Gatam; dis. of Sri. Vikku Vinayak Ram) rendered very good support to Raaghav.

At 7.15 PM. Sudha R. S. Iyer gave an excellent vocal concert for VDS. Her voice is soft, clear and versatile. Rendering the kritis with Raagalakshana. Born in a musical family, Mother-cum-guru Geetha Ramasubramanian ( Mayavaram Sisters) has trained her very well. Sudha is also a violinist, accompanying many concert at VDS and also in other sabhasa.

Her Sub-main Aanandha Bhairavi alapana was fine, she rendered the kriti marivere with niraval and kalpanaswaram very well. Main Poorvi Kalyani (RTP) was fine. A difficult thala pattern, Thisra Thirubuta (khanda Natai), she rendered the pallavi very well with well knit muthaippu swarams. She rendered the other kritis Neeye Paedhai (Banduvarali), Durga Lakshmi (Nalinakanti), Ninnu cheppa (Mandaari), Neekelana (Deva Manohari)  nicely. Lalgudi’s Misra mand Thillana was fine.

She got fine support from violinist Sri Vidhya R. S. Iyer and  Mridangist V. Prashanth.

On 12th October 2008 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. Sai Sruthi made her very good & fine maiden vocal performance for VDS. At 11 she is confident & sure. Her voice is sweet, bold and clear. Selection of the songs were very good and from different composers. She sang all the kritis very well as tutored by her guru Rajalakshmi Srinivasan.

Started with saveri varnam and followed by Mahaganapathe Palayasumam (Natanarayani) Kalyana Rama (Hamsanatham), Sarasamukhi (Gowdamalhar) all rendered nicely. Sub-main Bhairavi for Upacharamu was good. Both alapana and kalpanaswarams were fine. Main Kalyani (Sive Pahimam) alapana, niraval and kalpanaswarams were sung well. She sang the thukkadas Vandhan Vandhan (madhyamavathy), Baja Baja Venkata (Revathy) well.
 
A large  audience appreciated and blessed the budding artists

Akkarai M. Subashree  (Violin) & J. Arvind ( Mridangam) gave a good  support. Chief guest Sendhangudi Sri. Jayaraman blessed the artists.

On 11th October 2008 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. U. S. Ragavee gave a very good & fine vocal concert for VDS. Learning under Meera Shankaran. Her voice is fine & clear. She renders the kritis well.

Her Nattai (Jaya Jaya) was good. Main simendra madhymama was rendered very well. Alapana was good but short, kriti Neethucharanamule was rendered nicely with good niraval and swarams. Yochana (Durbar) and Brindavanam (Sudha Dhanyasi) were rendered nicely. She has to practise below sadjamam and to use modulation wherever necessary.

She got very good support from Violinist Srividhya R.S.Iyer and Mridangist R. Siva Subramanian.

At 7.15 PM. M. Lalitha Sudha’s 4th consecutive Excellent vocal concert was marked by all round knowledge fine rendering of kritis in her clear and soft voice. She is under the tutelage of Lakshmi Ragavan and Neela Jayakumar.

Her Sahana was fine. Kriti E vasudha was rendered nicely. Panthuvarali was o.k.. Alapana was short but good. She could have sung the kriti Visalakshim little slower. Mokshamukaladha in saaramati was rendered with bhava and raagalakshana. Main Saveri was very good. Alapana with some fast pidis and niraval, kalpanaswarams were rendered nicely. Sri Ramachandra of Thulsidas (Yamuna Kalyani) was sung melodiously.

She got fine support from violinist Srividhya R.S.Iyer & Mridangist Thiruvarur S.C. Venkatesh.

On 10th October 2008 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. K. Sanjana gave a very good & fine vocal concert for VDS. Learning under the able guidance of Nagamani Nagaraju. She has fine, bold and clear voice especially in the higher octave. She is well trained by gurus Nagamani Nagaraju and P.B.Sri Rangachari (previous).

She started with Mooladhara moorthe  followed by Kaliyuka (Brindavana Saranga), Gaanamurthe was sung very well. Main Poorvikalyani was good. After a good alapana she rendered the kriti Gynamusaka radha well. Niraval and kalpanaswaram were good. There were some repetition in the pidis. She sang the thukkadas Krishna nee begane, Mahadeva shiva sambo, Charanam Iyyappa (Mukari) and Kundavarali Thillana nicely.

Sudha R.S. Iyer (Violin) & K.R.Narayen ( Mridangam) gave a very good support.

At 7.15 PM. P. Preethi’s fine and very good vocal concert was noted by fine, clear and versatile voice. She renders the kritis with ragalakshna. She is our regular artist and this is his fourth concert at VDS. Her paatantharam is very good. Her guru Padma Chandilyan has trained her very well.

Preethit sang the saaranga kriti Gananadhane (Periasami Thooran) very well. Her poorvikalyani (sub-main) alapana was o.k. She rendered the kriti Anandanatamaduvar well. Puniyam oru kodi (keeravani) and Swathi thirunal’s Paramapurushan (Lalitha Panchamam) were rendered nicely.. Main Shankaraparanam was o.k. But the alapana was not step-by-step. There were, ofcourse  nice pidis. She sang the kriti Sankaracharyam very well with good niraval & kalpanaswaram.  

Violinist Sudha R.S. Iyer and Mridangist R. Charan gave a fine support to Preethi.

On 05th October 2008 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. M. Aishwarya from Trichirapalli & student of Ambujam Vedantham gave an excellent vocal concert for VDS. At 16 her manodharma is good. Sings with ragalakshana. Her voice is sweet, clear and versatile. She sang all kirits very well. Selection of the items for the concert was fine - songs of all important vageyakaras included.

 Begada Varnam Kaliyuka varadhane and GNB’s karimuka varadha (Nattai) Saint Papanasam Sivan’s Bowli all rendered with ragalakshana. Sub-main Bhairavi, Deekshider’s Chinthayamam was sung very well. Main kalyani alapana was neat, Shive pahimam kriti rendered very well with compact niraval and kalpanaswaram. She has to practice below sadjamam and can do alapana more elaborately. She sang Jeya devar ashtapathy in ragam Varamu nicely. 

R. Nagarajan (Violin) & M. Sriram ( Mridangam; brother of the vocalist) gave a fine  support to Aishwarya.

On 04th October 2008 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. G. Aishwarya gave a very good vocal concert for VDS.She is  learning under Padmashree Gayathri Shankar. Her voice is sweet & clear. She rendered the kritis Sri Mahaganapthi (Gowla), Pahimamasri (Janaranjani), Janani ninnuvina (Reethigowla), Bandureethi (Hamsanatham) & Nanoruvilayauttu (Navarasa kanada) very well.

Main Poorvikalyanai was o.k. She has to practise below sadjamam. She sang the thukkadas , Arulavendum thaaye (saramathi) and Madhuvanthy thilaana nicely.

At 7.15 PM. Bangalore S. Shruthi rendered a very good vocal concert. She is our regular artist  singing from 2002 and this is her seventh concert for VDS. At 16 she is sure, confident ,With  fine and versatile voice and good all-round knowledge. She learnt from Lakshmi V. Koushik and presently learning under Kanakalakshmi of Bangalore.

Her Mohanam was good. Main Pantuvaralaiwas was very good. After a good alapana she rendered the kriti amba manam kanidhunadhu very well. She did niraval and kalpanaswaram well; though repetition in pidis. Hindolam was good at the higher octave-below sadjamam was not audible. She sang the thukkadas nicely. .

She was ably guided by violinist Ganesh & Mridangist R. Srinivas.

On 03rd October 2008 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. B. Suvasini gave an excellent vocal concert for VDS. Learning under Padma Chandilyan & Lalitha Ramachandran., she sings with ragalakshana and she is quite confident.

Starting with Vasantha Varnam  she sung Gajavadhana well. Main Shanmugapriya alapana was fine. Rendered the kriti Paarvathi nayagane well with fine niraval and excellent kalpanaswaram. She halted in different places effortlessly. She sang Purandara Dasar thukkada nicely. She has to practise below sadjamam.

M.S. Ananthashree (Violin; yet another artist from Parur family & grand daughter of Parur Sri. M.S.Anantharaman) & K.R.Narayen ( Mridangam) gave a very good support.

At 7.15 PM. N.S. Vignesh’s yet another excellent vocal concert was marked by fine manodharma and fine rendering of kritis with ragalakshna. He is our regular artist and this is his fourth concert at VDS. He is under the tutelage of  Tambaram V. Sundaresan .

His Lalitha (sub-main) was fine. After a neat alapana he sang the kriti Hiranmayi very well. Niraval & kalpanaswaram had variety. Ninnuvina in reethi gowla was sung very well in D.K.Jayaraman style. His main Kalyani (Talli Ninnu) was good. But it was shoter than the sub-main in all respect.  The lone thukkada Maname kanamum (Bhimplas) was rendered beautifully.

Violinist R. Shyam, Mridangist G. Karthik gave a fine support to Vignesh.
