Review ( Month of November '09)

On 29th November 2009 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. N. Sajanthi made a very good vocal performance at VDS. This is her maiden performance at VDS. Her voice is fine, sweet and clear. Rendering kritis with ragalakshana. Paatanthram by Guru Padma Sandilyan.

Evari Bodhana (Aboghi) varnam, Gopalaka (Bhoopalam), Bakthajana (Ananda Bhairavi) were sung very nicely. Main Manavylak (Nalinakanthi) was fine; it had some nice pidis in the alapana and swarams. Thukkadas nalle nalla naal, Gayathri vanmali and hindolam thillana also sung melodiously.

V. Supraja on Violin and R. Santhosh Ram on Mridangam gave a very good support.

On 28th November 2009 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. A. Mukhil Mayuri rendered a good vocal concert. This is her fourth performance at VDS. Her voice is good, bold clear and good range. Confidence is also good at 15. Patantharam is very good. Guru Sakunthala Seshadri has trained her very well.

Kriti Manadhe Maravadhe (Hemavathi) sung nicely. Main Mohanam alapana was good. She sang the kriti Kapaali with fine niraval and swarams. She sang the thukkadas melodiously.

V. B. Bhavana on Violin and Nellai V. Sreekrishnan on Mridangam gave a very good support to Mukhil.

Thiru. Nanmaran (Advocate) of AIR, chief guest of the programme blessed the artists.

At 7.15 PM. Srikrishnan Subramanian’s Key-Board performance was excellent. This is his 4th and I st promotional concert to one and half hour slot. He proved worthy of his promotion. His tonal quality of the instrument is fine. Guru Radha venkatakrishnan has trained him very well.

His selection of the songs for the concert was fine and from different major composers.
Nattai kurinji varnam, Gajavadhana, Deve Deva kalayamidhe, Brocheva, Raghuveera ranadheera, Niravathi sukadha, Shobillu, Sarasa sama dhana, Himadri sudhe all played beautifully. Thukkadas Kuzhaloodhi, Mani Iyer notes, Muralidhara Gopala and vellai thamarai played melodiously.

Shraddha Ravindran (violin) and Thriyambak Premchander (mridangam) gave a very good support to Srikrishnan.

On 22nd November 2009 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. G. Vishwanath presented excellent vocal performance for VDS. His over all knowledge and confidence is high at 13. Rendering the kritis with ragalakshana. His voice is fine, bold and clear especially in the higher octave. He has to practice below sadjamam. Selections of the songs were fine. He has been very well trained by his guru Delhi V. Muthukumar.

His pantuvarali alapana was though short and neat for kriti naradamuni he rendered fine kalpanaswaram. Main shankarabaranam was perfect. His niraval & kalpanaswaram were fine for kriti mahalakshmi. Koteeswara Iyer’s Arul seiyya and Hamsanandhi thirupugazh sung beautifully.

M. S. Anantha Shri on Violin and Sumesh Narayanan on Mridangam gave a very good support.

At 7.15 PM. R. Shyam’s (he is also one among the best violinist and also key-board artist) violin-solo performance was excellent. He is learning violin under the tutelage of M. Chandrasekhar (present), Lalitha Raghavan (Previous) and key-board from veteran Alathoor G. Nagarajan. His over all knowledge and swaram kalpana were remarkable at just 13. He uses his intelligence where ever needed by singing kritis while playing the instrument. His gamakas and brigas were fine with proper pro-notes.

Selections of the songs were fine from various composers. Karunai seyvai was brisk opening. Bilahari alapana was neat for kriti Naajeevadhara. Thodi was the master piece for to-days performance. He showed his all talents in kriti thaaye yashodha very nicely. Though the alapana was short and perfect he played some imaginative pidis in kalpana swarams.

Both Thalaignaiuru S. Harishkumar (mridangam) and V. Sai Subramanian (morsing) gave fine support.

On 21st November 2009 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. G. Aishwarya performed good vocal concert for VDS. He is our regular artist. She has been trained well by guru Gayathri Shankar.

Aishwarya’s voice is fine, sweet and clear. Selection of the songs were good and from different composers. Reethi gowla though the alapana was short but well for kriti Raga rathna. Kalpana swarams were good. Main kalyani alapana was o.k. She rendered the kriti Amma varamma, niraval and swarams very nicely. She rendered the thukkadas very nicely including Lalgudi’s Desh thillana.

Sharddha on violin and K.R. Narayanan on Mridangam gave a very good support to Aishwarya.

At 7.15 PM. R. Hariram made excellent veena concert. He is striking the instrument nicely. Playing the kritis with ragalakshana. His tonal quality is fine. Knowledge also fine and also very well trained by his guru Sr. Kamala Ashwathama.

Selections of kritis were fine from different vageyakaras. But all of them played slowly. He can add one or two fast songs. Mathey Malayadwaja (Kamas), needhaya radha (Vasantha Bhairavi), kamakshi (bhairavi) with swarajathi, Sabapathykku (abhogi) all played with ragalakshana. Main ragam, thanam, kirthanam in ragam mayamalagowla for kriti Sri Nadhadhi guru was fine. For want of time we missed some nice thukkadas.

V. Gowrishankar (mridangam) and Ramya Ramesh (gatam) gave wonderful support to Hariram.

On 20th November 2009 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. K.P. Nandini is a child prodigy, now she is 18. She has all features to become a leading musician no doubt about it. She is a versatile vocalist and also a fine violinist. Performing both vocal and violin in the major sabas in the festival seasons and also widely traveling all over India for concerts. Her overall musical knowledge is very high. Her manodharma, intelligence and confidence all she developed through VDS in the past 10 years and also from the great guidance of her guru Lalitha Raghvan for violin and mother-cum-guru Uma Prabhakar (Mayavaram Sisters) for vocal.

Coming on to the to-day’s performance, her sub-main Naataikurinji and main Kamboji alapanas she handled carefully with some nice pidis for kritis Gopalakrishna Bharathi’s Vazhimaraithirukudhe and Saint Thiyagaraja’s Maa Janaki were played with ragalakshana. Her kalpana swarams were also fine. The lone thukkada Chinnan chirukiliye played melodiously.

S.R. Ethirajan on Mridangam gave a very good support to Nandini.


At 7.15 PM. R. Kalpalathika’s vocal performance was marked by fine saariram, sruthi and perfect layam. She is also a child prodigy. She had grown along with VDS in the past 10 years. She is the recipient of prestigious `BALA BASKARA’ award from VDS last year. She sings with full involvement and ragalakshana. She had been groomed by gurus Sakunthala Seshadri and now by Prema Hariharan. Now she is performing in all the major sabhas in festival seasons.

Her atana varnam was the best opening of to-day’s concert. Malayamarutham (sub-main) alapana has some nice pidis and of-course main kalyani also rendered very nicely for kiriti Eathukiuni manasa. Alapana, niraval and swarams were fine to listen. Lone thukkada dheena charanyane sung beautifully.

K.J. Dileep’s parur mudhra was really good. S.R. Ethiraj’s thani was attractive.
