Review ( Month of May '09)

On 30th May 2009 (Saturday) at 6.30 PM. Magani Menitha of Hyderabad has given an Excellent Bharathanatyam performance. She is very confident and good features for a dancer. At 12 she is tall, dancing with full involvement with graceful smiling. Her foot-work is very brisk and good. Limb movements also fine. It was a full fledged programme. Guru Chitra Narayanan has trained her very well.

Her sancharibhava was fine both in Shabdam on goddess Ambal annapoorani and in varnam in reedhi gowlai from Sadhanama Ashtothram of lord Krishna . Her face expression also very graceful in varnam. She enjoys her self what she did. It shows her full involvement. Padam in Kalyani of Narayana theerthar was simply superb. Valachi thillana also fine.

A fine vocal by Koushik, C.K. Vasudevan (mridangam), Sholapuram V. Shankar (violin) and Shankaranarayanan (Flute) rendered their fine support. In fact the music orchestra fully supported the dancer very well for the success of the programme.

On 24th May 2009 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. S. Anupama daughter and disciple of Kalyani Shankar performed a good vocal concert. She is rendering kritis well. Her voice is good, clear and sweet.
Pantuvarali kriti was rendered very well. Alapana was o.k., Kriti Ramunimaravagave was sung very well. Tutored kalpanaswaram let her down.

Simple pattern of kalpanaswaram which can be remembered is o.k., She sang the paras thillana very well.

Sriram Sridhar, Violin and Vignesh Rajagopal on Mridangam gave a very good support.

At 7.15 PM. Niranjana Ramanan performed an excellent vocal concert for VDS. This is her maiden performance at VDS. She proved worthy of direct selection in to senior slot by her first concert itself.

Learning under the tutelage of Prema Hariharan and also learnt from late Sulochana Pattabhiraman.

Niranjana’s over all music knowledge is fine, rendering the kritis with ragalakshana and fine manodharma. Her voice is fine, sweet & clear in the higher octave. Below sadjamam rather hoarse. Her kalpanaswarams had varietiy.

Lathangi alapana was good. Kriti venkataramana was rendered melodiously.

Main Sankarabaranam was fine. After a neat alapana she sang Manasu swadeenambi very well. Niraval and kalpanaswaram was also good.

Accompanists B. Sudha on violin and V. Prashanth on Mridangam gave a very good support.

23rd May 2009 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM.  R . Padmapriya gave a very good vocal performance. Her voice is good, sweet and clear. She sings the kriti with ragalakshana. Guru Lalitha Santhanam (Saathur Sisters) has trained her very well.

Main Reedhigowla was good. Alapna was o.k., She rendered the kriti  Paripalayamam very well. Kalpanaswaram was o.k. But there is no muthaippu swaram. She can sing niraval also. T.K. Vidya’s (violin) reply of alapana was too short. The thani by K.R. Narayen (mridangam) & Sai Subramanian (morsing) was very good. Padmapriya sang the thukkadas very well.

At 7.15 PM. V. S. Shruthi’s third consecutive excellent vocal concert for VDS.was fine. Her all round knrdledge at 17 is very high. She sings the kritis with ragalakshana. She is very good at kalpanaswarams. Her voice is smooth and versatile. Her patantharam is fine. Gurus P.B. Srirangachari, Dr. Manjula Sriram and Lalitha Subramaniam have trained her very well.

She sang Ramanaman in Kamas beautifully. Pantuvarali alapana was good Krithi  Aparamabakthi was rendered well. Niraval was fine. Main Upacharamulanu in Bhairavi was very good. The alapana had some nice pidis, at times there was repetition of pidis. She sang the kriti nicely with fine niraval and swarams. She was not audible below sadjamam. She sang the thukkadas melodiously.At times there is fall in swarasthanam It was evident in  Shanmugapriya virutham  Idhu dhano thillaisthalam in Behag was also fine.

K. J. Dileep (Violin) and Punith S. Davey (Mridangam) gave a very good support.

On 16th May 2009 (Saturday) at 6.30 PM . G. Renukadevi gave a very good Bharathanatyam performance. At 15 she is very confident, her foot work also good and it was a full fledged programme. Guru Deepa Balaji has trained her very well.

Papanasam Sivan’s Ean indha maayam (Dhanyasi) varnam was good. She did perfect jathis answering gurus choreography. Renukadevi’s bhava was fine in Pahimam Sri Raja Rajeswari (Jana ranjani) and Oothukadu’s Kuzhaloodhi (Kambhoji) padhams. Both music and dance were fine for the padhams. There is scope of improvement in adavus and abhinayas, as she is a young dancer. Kunchidapadam’s Kaapi thillana was nice.

Vocal by V. Venugopal, K.R. Venkatsubramanian (mridangam), V. Muruganandham (violin) (in fact all the three artists received best accompanying artist for dance award from the VDS) and B. N. Ramesh (Flute) rendered their fine support.

On 10th May 2009 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM . The twin Sisters Deeptha Vasudevan and Swetha Vasudevan performed an excellent vocal concert. At 15 their confidence is high. Their voice is good and singing in one voice. They sing the kritis with ragalakshana. Gurus (late) Sulochana Pattabiraman, Prema Hariharan and P. Vasanthkumar have trained them very well.

They sang all the kritis well. Pancharatna kriti Jagadhananda was fine. But it was very fast. A slower tempo would have a better effect. Main Bilahari was very good. Alapana was o.k., They sang the kriti Narasimha nicely. Niraval and kalpanaswaram were good. Most of the kritis were weighty ones. They handled very well.

M.S. Anantha Shree on Violin and Thalaignairu S. Harishkumar on Mridangam gave a very good support.

Vidhushi Smt. Bagyalakshmi Suresh; a senior. dis. of Smt. Sulochana Pattabiraman, who was the chief guest blessed Deeptha and Swetha.

At 7.15PM. Erode S. Anantharaman's sixth consecutive excellent vocal concert was marked by fine manodharma, all round knowledge and free flow of kalpanaswarams. Now his voice has improved in lower octave with a fine base. Selection of the songs for the concert was fine. It had variety.

Main Vagadheeshwari was fine. It is a difficult raga to handle, but not for Anantharaman. The alapana was neat. He rendered the kriti Paramathmudu very well. Kalpanaswarams flow like cascades. Violinist M. Vijay’s essay of raga & swaram was smooth & nice. Harishkumar’s thani vibrated with solkattu & fine tone. Anantharaman sang the thukkadas melodiously. Various gurus including Meena Venkatraman (Erode), Geetha Ramasubramanian (Chennai) and presently Seerkazhi Jayaraman (Chennai) have trained him very well.

Silver screen personality & popular Music Director Sri. M.S. Viswanathan, the chief guest of the concert blessed the children.

On 09th May 2009 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM . S. Ashwini gave a good vocal performance. Her voice is bold and clear. She sings kritis well. Her gurus Saroja Balaubramaniam and Kamala Venkatraman have trained her very well as far as rendering kriti is concerned.

The alapana of Hamsadwani was so so. Kriti Mooladara was rendered very well. Her voice below sadjamam is rather hoarse. Main Bilahari; she was not confident in alapana. The kriti Sri chamudeswari was rendered well. Kalpanaswaram was good as tutored. There was no niraval or muthaippu swaram. Maaramanan was sung very well. She sang Brindavana Saranga thillana very well.

T. K. Vidhya on Violin and K. Sriram on Mridangam gave adequate support to Aswini.

Chief guest; Vidhushi Kalaimamani Thiruvarur Smt. N. Balam blessed the artists.

On 08th May 2009 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. S. Suchitra from Madurai performed her Excellent Vocal concert for VDS. Her over all knowledge is good. Her voice is sweet and fluent. She uses gamakas and brugas effortlessly. Kalpanaswaram is good, well trained by her guru Madurai R. Kannan.

She rendered Merusamana in Mayamala Gowla very well. Main Amirthavarshini was fine. The alapana was very good. She sang the kriti Aanandamrudhagarshini very well. Kalpanaswaram was good, but the virutham was too long. She can just show a glimpse of it.

Violinist Shraddha and Mridangist R. Akshayram gave a very good support to Suchitra.

Chief guest; Vidhushi Smt.. Radha Kalyanaraman blessed the children.

At 7..15 PM. S. Gayathri gave a good vocal concert. Her voice is good. She sings kritis well. Guru Sukantha Kalamegam has trained her very well.

The short alapana in Pantuvarali was good. She sang the kriti Visalakshi well. Gayathri sang Thelisirama neatly but there was starting problem in sruthi. She adjusted later. Main Karaharapriya was o.k.. There was some good pidis in alapana. But it was in bits not coherent. She sang the kriti Sendhil Aandavan very well. Kalpanaswaram was very good.

M.K. Ananthalakshmi (Violin) & K.H. Vineeth (Mridangam) gave a very good support.

On 03rd May 2009 (Sunday) at 6.30 PM.. That was an excellent  dance performance by V. Anjana. She is very confident. She is agile, very brisk with elegant limb and foot-work movements. Guru Latha Ravi has trained her very well. It was a full-fledged programme. Pushpanjali, Alarippu in thisra jaathi dhuruva thalam,  Thanjai Naalvar’s Jathiswaram (Chakravaham) and Swathi Thirunal composition of Shabdham all were fine.

K.N. Dhandayuthapani’s composition of Navaragamalika (Thodi, Mohanam, Vasantha, Devamanohari, Shankarabaranam, Saaranga, Kanada, Arabi and Bairavi) a unique varnam was simply superb. Anjana excelled in answering intervening jathis. . Gopalakrishna Bharathi’s Sivakama Sundari in jaganmohini a story of Abhiramapattar was good. Hanumandha devonama a composition of Purandara dasar in poorvikalyani was fine to see. Anjana’s face expression like Lord Anjaneya, conveying the story with fine jathis and its execution. We must appreciate both guru Latha Ravi and student for that good idea. Both music and dance synchronized very well in varnam. Large number of audience including guru’s other lot of students enjoyed & encouraged  anjana’s performance.

Vocalist Sudev Warriar, C.K. Vasudevan (mridangam), Sozhapuram V. Shankar (violin)  rendered their support well.

Chief guest Mrs. Mutharasi Ravi, a dance exponent blessed Anjana.

On 02nd May 2009 (Saturday) at 6.30 PM.  Monica Narayanan gave a fine & very good Bharathanatyam performance for VDS. Learning under the tutelage of  Sikkil Vasanthakumari., she dances with involvement, dedication and keen interest. Her foot-work, limb movements are good with flexible body.

 Pushpanjali, Alarippu and jathiswaram was good. Muthuswami Dikshidar’s Thodi Varnam was performed very well with neat answering of jathis . Monica’s both bhava and abhinaya were fine in Thandai silambu (Padham) and Nettrandhi nerathile (Padham). Boochi Srinivasa Iyangar’s paras thillana was also fine.

Vocal support of Akkarai M. Subashree ( VDS artist and VAA TOP TEN thambura prize  winner), Baba Prasad (mridangam), Sholapuram V. Shankar (violin) and Kadappa Raghavendra (flute) was very supportive to the dancer.

On 01st May 2009 (Friday) at 6.30 PM . R. Supprasanna daughter and disciple of Latha Ravi gave a very good Bharathanatyam performance. She is lean, flexible and her foot work is also good. She has good features for a dancer.

Alarippu, jathiswaram of Thanjai Naalvar, shabdham of Madurai N. Krishnan everything was good but simplified. Valachi varnam composed by music critic Subuddu was extremely good. She answered the jathis neatly. Other items Thevaram, Vaarana Maayiram (Ragamalika), Oothukadu Venkatasubbaiyer’s Maadu meikkum kanna (Senchuruti) and Dr. Balamurali’s Brindavana Saranga thillana were very nice to watch.

Vocal by Sudev Warriar; dis. of Dr. M. Balamurali Krishna, C.K. Vasudevan (mridangam), Sozhapuram V. Shankar (violin) and Raghavendar (Flute) rendered their support well.

Dancer Ms. R. Padma, chief guest blessed the artist Supprasanna.
