Review ( Month of July '09)

On 19th July 2009 (Sunday) at 5.00 PM . Abhishek Balakrishnan from USA gave a very good Violin-solo concert at VDS. This is his maiden performance. He looks a dedicated artiste. At 15 he is quite confident. Guru Usha Rajagopal has trained him very well.

His fingering is good. Bowing is o..k. He can at times reduce the pressure on the strings for modulations. He played saint Thiyagarajar’s Sogajudarama in Kannada Gowla very well.. Main Shanmugapriya was very good. Alapana was short but neat. He played the kriti Saravana Bhava well. Kalpanaswaram was good with a perfect muthaippu swaram.

Percussionist Varun Ramaswami on Mridangam gave a good support.

Mr. Anantha from Houston guest of honour of the programme blessed Abhishek and Varun.

At 6.00 PM . R. Neharika and R. Krithika gave a very good Vocal-duet concert at VDS. They sing in one voice. They sing kritis neatly; well trained by guru Dr. Subhashini Parthasarathy.

They sang Idadhupadham thooki in kamas very well. Main Kalyani alapana was o.k. looked like tutored. They sang the kriti Bajanaseyare well. Swaram was also good. The ragamalika kriti Masillayodhi well.

To-day’s accompanists M. Jwalini on Violin and Varun Ramaswami on Mridangam gave a very good support to Neharika and Krithika.

Dr. Nirmala Soundararajan chief guest of the programme blessed the children.

At 7.15 PM . That was an excellent concert by M. Lakshmi Her voice is her asset. It is sweet and clear with natural brugas. She sings with ragalakshana. Her over all knowledge is also good. Her gurus late Sulochana Pattabiraman, Prema Hariharan & P. Vasanthkumar have trained her very well.

Sriganapathim in Sowrashtram was sung very well. Poorivi Kalyani was good. Madhyamavathi kriti was sung very well. Main Sri Ranjani was o.k. Alapana was short and crisp. She sang the kriti Srirama Chandra very well. Niraval and kalpanaswaram were o.k. She could have sung the kriti in a slower speed to be comfortable. The ragamalika kriti was rendered melodiously.

R. Shyam (Violin), S.R. Ethirajan (Mridangam) gave a fine support to Lakshmi.

On 18th July 2009 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM . V. B. Bhavana gave a very good vocal concert. For the first concert at 15 she did it very well. Her voice is bold. She sings the kritis neatly. Guru Ajai Namboodri has trained her very well.

She sang the Valachi kriti very well. Main kalyani was good. After a neat but short alapana, she sang the kriti Pankaja lochana very well. We are happy she did niraval and fine kalpanaswarams. Selection of the songs was good but the trinities were omitted in the list.

To-day’s accompanists Shraddha (violin) and Santhosh Ram (Mridangam) gave a fine support to Bhavana.

At 7.15 PM. K. Dharini is an asthana vidhushi of VDS. We are very proud to say she is a popular singer in the city sabhas and prize winner in many competitions organized by all the major sabhas and including Thambura Prize from our VDS. She has grown along with VDS. A dedicated artist, her all round knowledge & manodharma is of high order. An important student of (late) Smt. Sulochana Pattabhiraman.

Her rendering of Mukari showed her mettle. She lived in that raga through out. Main Reethigowla was very good. She handled the raga effectively. The kriti Janani ninnuvina was rendered with ragalakshana.

The accompanying artists are senior in VDS. Hence no wonder the three Dharini, M. Vijay (Violin), S.R. Ethirajan (Mridangam) combined very well to give a fine concert.

On 17th July 2009 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. N.Hamsa performed a very good vocal concert at VDS. She is very confident. She sings with ragalakshana. She is learning under guru Ajai Namboodri and also from Kalakshetra.

Mamava Pattabi Rama (Manirangu) was sung very well. Alapana was o.k. She sang the kriti Lalithe in Bhairavi very well. Niraval was very short. Kalpanaswaram was good. She has to build it up gradually. She sang karpooram narumo melodiously.

Shraddha on Violin and B. Sai Shankar on Mridangam gave a good support.

On17th July 2009 (Friday) at 7.15 PM. That was an yet another Excellent vocal concert by R. Vaishnavi for VDS. This is her 7th concert here. She has improved in all departments. Her voice is fine, clear, smooth with adequate Brigas and gamakas. She sings with raagalakshana. Her all round knowledge is very high. All credit to guru Meera Kedarnathan.

Her latahngi was good. The brisk kriti Marivere sung neatly. Main
Bhairavi was fine. She delivered the alapana with innovative pidis
with fine niraval and kalpanaswaram for kriti Janani mamava. She sang the thukkadas melodiously. Selection of the songs were fine and had variety.

K.J. Dileep on Violin and Srivanchiam R. Sriram on Mridangam gave a fine support to Vaishnavi.

On 12th July 2009 (Sunday) at 6.30 PM. Madhuvanthi Sekar gave a fine & very good Bharathanatyam performance. She is our regular artist this being her 4th performance at VDS. Guru Himaja Ramsharan,s training is very good.

Madhuvanthi’s bhava was fine both in the padham Chinnansiru kiliye and Dharbari kanada meera bhajan. Her foot-work and sanchari bhava was fine in K.N. Dhandayudhapani Pillai’s Naataikurunji varnam good . Selection of items was good but many of them were slow.-paced. Of course the desh thillana was very brisk and fine.

Music was fine, vocal by Latha Ramchand, Thanjai Chandrasekar (mridangam), Sikkil Balu (violin) and Shankarnarayanan (Flute) rendered fine support.

Kalaimamani Indra Rajan the danseuse, chief guest and Kalaimamani Smt. Uma Anand, guest of honor of the programme blessed the artist.

On 11th July 2009 (Saturday) at 6.30 PM. Akshaya Rajagopal performed a Very-good and fine performance of Bharathanatyam for VDS. This is her maiden solo performance. She has fine features for a dancer. Graceful , with smiling face through out and full involvement. Her foot-work and limb movements are o.k., At 10 she is very confident. Very well trained by her guru Sheela Unnikrishnan.

She did the shabdham well. She answered the jathis of the varnam in ragam Simhendra madhimam neatly and enacted the sancharibhava well.. Her brisk dance for Brindavana nilaye was fine. There is scope for improvement in bhava, of course she is a ten year old child and she did very well.

Music for the dance was very supportive. Rajeswari Kumar (vocal), Ramshankar Babu (Mridangam), M.S. Kannan (violin) & Pathanjali (flute).

Bharathanatyam exponent Mrs. Madhumathi Prakash, chief guest and Sri. Vedhantham Ramu, guest of honor of the evening's programme blessed Akshaya.

On 05th July 2009 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM . Nanditha Srinivasan from Canada gave a very good Vocal concert at VDS. This is her maiden performance. Her voice is good. She sings kritis very well. Guru Uma Prabhakar has trained her very well.

Thenuka is difficult ragam – she sang the kriti Theliya leru rama perfectly and she did a fine kalpanaswaram also. Main Kalyani was good. Alapana was so so. Sang the kriti Himadri Sudhe pahimam very well. Kalpanaswaram was good. Poidhana in ragam Dhurga was sung beautifully. Selection of the items were good and from different composers. She sang the thukkadas nicely.

To-day’s accompanists K.P. Nandini on Violin and N.C. Bharadwaj on Mridangam gave a fine support to Nanditha.

At 7.15 PM. That was an excellent concert by K.P. Nandini our asthana vidushi for both violin and vocal. To-day we saw her occupying both the places. If there was one more concert to-day perhaps she would have taken the Mridangam place.

Her all round knowledge & manodharma is very high – if has to before she comes from a musical family of Mayavaram sisters. Pattantharam is fine; credit goes to her mother-cum-guru Uma Prabhakar.

She sang the Ninnuchepa kriti in Mantari ragam well followed by torrential flow of kalpanaswarams. Kaapi was realy sowkiyam for kriti indha sowkiyam of saint Thigarajar. Alapana had nice pidis but she could have built the speed gradually. Main Shanmugapriya was fine. She sang the kriti Thandhai Thai very well with bhava. The alapna was good. Kalpanaswaram had variety. She sang the thukkadas nicely and melodiously.

H. V. Raghuram (Violin), N.C. Bharadwaj (Mridangam) gave a fine support to Nandini.


On 04th July 2009 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM . Shraddha Ravindran gave a very good Violin solo concert. Now she improved and plays the kritis neatly. Her guru Radha Sundaresan has trained very well.

She played Mokshamukaladha in Charumathi very well. Muruga Muruga in Saveri was good. Main Mohanam was good. After a neat alapana she played the kriti Nannu palimba well. Kalpanaswaram also good. We missed some thukkadas for want of time.

To-day’s accompanists Sanjay Subramaniam from U.S.A on the Mridangam and S. Sri Sainath on the Gatam gave very good support to Shraddha.

At 7.15 PM. Rohini Shankar’s 5th concert and her first promotional concert to one and half hour senior slot. She did it well by her very good vocal concert. She very confident and sure. Her voice is bold, though a bit hoarse. Her pattantharam is very good. Gurus Rajalakshmi Srinivasan and Vasanthi Gopal have trained Rohini very well.

She sang Reethi gowla kriti very well – kalpanaswaram also good. Hindolam was so so. Main Shanmugapriya was good, though the alapana has some nice pidis but not coherent. She sang the kriti marivere vere well. Kalpanaswaram had variety. At 15 her proficiency in kalpanaswaram is high. She has to be very careful about occasional slip in swarasathanams. She has to practice below sadjamam also. We are happy a large number of rasikas asserted and encouraged the young artists.

Koushik Sivaramakrishnan (Violin), Thiruvarur S.C. Venkatesh (Mridangam) and S. Sri Sainath (Gatam) gave a fine support to Rohini.

On 3rd July 2009 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. S.Lakshmipriya has performed a very good key-board recital at VDS. The tonal quality of the instrument was very good. She uses anuswaras very well. Well trained by gurus Patahamadai Manisundaram and P.B. Sri Rangachari.

Lalgudi’s Charukesi Varnam was good but alapana in detail was unnecessary. Nalinakanthi for Thiagarajar’s Manavyalakim was played nicely. Main Kalyani was good. The alapana has some nice pidis though there were repetition of pidis. She played the kriti Nithichala very nicely with niraval and kalpanaswarams. K.J. Dileep’s assistance on Violin was fine. The thani by G. Kirthivasan (Mridangam) and S. Sri Sainath (Gatam) was good.

At 7.15 PM. N.S. Aruna proved worthy of her promotion to one and half hour senior slot by her excellent vocal concert. She has good over all knowledge and manodharma. She sings with ragalakshana. Guru Padma Sandilyan’s training was very good. Aruna’s voice has a good range-but looks suppressed not free flow-may due to influence in light music where the sruthi is put the pressure.

Her Hamsadwani kriti varavallaba Ramana was very good. Lathangi raga alapana was fine. She sang the main bhairavi very well – alapana has innovative pidis. She sang the kriti Bala Gopalam with ragalakshana. Her voice is a bit hoarse below sadjamam in the manthrasthayi. Niraval & swaram were good. It had variety and she sang with full involvement. The lone thukkada in Bagheshri was sung melodiously.

K.P. Nandini (Violin) & R. Akshayram (Mridangam) gave a fine support to Aruna.
