Review ( Month of January 2011)

On 30th January 2011 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. That was maiden vocal concert by G.S. Simhanjana, it was very good. At 12 she is quite confident with clear voice. She rendered the kritis neatly. Her voice is bold. She has been well trained by her gurus Uma Prabhakar and (late) Sulochana Pattabiraman.

Vasantha kriti was good. Main kalyani was very good. After a neat alapana she sang the kriti Unnai allal well. Kalpana swaram was fine it had variety. She sang the thukkadas nicely.

K.P. Haricharan on violin and N.C. Bharadwaj on mridangam gave a very good support to Simhanjana.

She was blessed by many VIPs visited at VDS, Sri. M.S. Pattabhiraman; chief guest of the programme, Smt. Aruna Sairam; Musician, Dr. Sarada Nambiyarooran; commissioner, Mr. Arul Natarajan; Director, Tamil valarchi thurai all along with a large number of audiences.

On 29th January 2011 (Saturday) at 6.30 PM. H. Sri Dhanya performed a fine and very good dance performanceat VDS. She is a brisk and elegant dancer. Her bhava has improved now over her previous performance in 2006. Her guru Deepa Balaji has trained her very well.

She did the Naati kurunji varnam Swami naan undhan adimai very well. She answered the lengthy intricate jathis neatly with much ease. The abhinaya for Epadithan en ullam padam was fine. Maadumeikkum kanna e was very attractive.

Music both vocal and instrumental was very supportive to the dancer. Vocal by V. Venugopal, Veda Krishnan (mridangam), Muruganandham (Violin) and B.N. Ramesh (Flute).

The dance couples Shivakalalayam Sri. S. Shivakumar and Smt. Shylaja Shivakumar chief guest(s) blessed the dancer.

On 15th January 2011 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. The new comer for VDS Anusha Ravi gave a good vocal performance. Her voice is fine, melodious and fluent. She renders the kritis neatly. She sang the kritis Sreeman Narayana, Niravadhi Sukadha and Thelisi ramachandra well. Swaram was o.k. in Hamsadwani for Sadha Sivan maindhane. Main Shanmugapriya alapana was short but good. Kalpanaswaram was o.k. for Saravna bhava. Pattantharam is also very good and well trained by Guru Janaki Ramanujam.

V. Shreyas (Violin) and R. Sathoshram (Mridangam) gave a very good support.

Chief Guest of the evening Vidhwan Sri. Ishwara Iyer has blessed the artistes.


At 7.15 PM. Sri Krishnan Subramanian is our regular artiste in Key-Board, Performing for 6th time here. His confidence is high at 14. He has been improving in all departments. He is thorough with the instrument. Learning under the tutelage of Kovai Dakshinamurthy and Radha Venkatakrishnan. He uses his left hand for thalam for maintaining the kalpanaswaram is very good. The tonal quality of the instrument and over all concert was fine and very good.

He played evarura in mohanam well. Main kalyani was good. He did the alapana with some good pidis. Thanam and swaram were fine. Lalgudi's Kadhanakudhugalam thillana was fine.

V. Supraja on Violin and R. Srinivas on mridangam gave fine support.

On 14th January 2011 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. S. Girish performed a good Key-Board concert at VDS. This is his maiden solo performance. He is very confident at 14. Playing the instrument is good. Selections of the kritis were good and suited for the instrument. Guru C. Bhuvaneswari has trained him very well.

Bandurithi in Hamsanadham was good. Main Aabheri also good. Though the alapana was short he played the kriti nagumomu well. Kalpanaswaram was o.k. Ennathavam in kaapi was played neatly.

M.K. Ananthalakshmi (Violin) and T. Karthik (Mridangam) gave a very good support to Girish.


At 7.15 PM. S.H. Raaghav a senior artiste in VDS performed his very good Veena concert. He is our regular artiste and performing for the 5th time here. His concert was noted for melody and neat rendering of kritis. Guru Dr. Kamala Ashwathama has trained him very well.

Sivasakthi krithi was played very well. Main Aadamodikaladhe in charukesi was very good. After a neat alapana he played the kriti very well. Kalpanam was very good. He played the thukkadas melodiously.

K. Arvind Shankar on Mridangam and K.R. Narayan on kanjira gave very good support to Raaghav.

On 09th January 2011 (Sunday) at 5.00 PM. That was excellent vocal performance by Aamani for VDS. She is our regular artiste from New Jersey, this is her 3rd and Ist promotional concert to one and half hour senior slot. Now she is improved in all departments. Her voice is fine, sweet and soft. Paatantharam by Guru Uma Prabhakar is very good.

She began with fine naatai kurinji varnam, then followed by Saranam siddhi vinayaka detailed kalpanaswarams. Sub-main anandha bhairavi alapana was good for kriti O Jagadamba. Kalpanaswaram also very good.

She did the main Dharmavathi very well; alapana has some nice pidis and also in detailed. Niraval and kalpanaswarams were rendered very well. She brought out the beauty of madhyamavathi in Ramanama bhajare..

K.P. Haricharan (Violin) and N.C. Bharadwaj (Mridangam) gave a fine support.

On 09th January 2011 (Sunday) at 6.30 PM. V. Anupama Iyer's dance arangetram was noted by excellent performance at VDS. We are happy to see maturity on her performance. At 20 lean, tall, flexible limb movements with good foot-work. It was a full-fledged programme. Gurus S. Shivakumar and Shylaja Shivakumar have trained the dancer very well.

Mahakavi's Vellai thamarai was so nice to watch. She attracted the large number of audiences by her fine mudras and abhinaya in the Shiva stuti. Her foot-work and face expression were elegant in the Varnam; varuvano vagai solladi, she answered the intricate jathis neatly. Chinnanjiru kiliye was pleasing. Kaavadi chindu also best with special effects by the musicians. Margazhi thingal was also very good. Bhava oriented Harivarasanam was simply superb.

Both music and instrumental was fine and synchronized very well to-day. Sashidaran; dis. of Padmabushan Dr. K.J. Yesudas (Vocal) has sung beautifully, R. Karthikeyan (mridangam) and Ananthakrishnan (Violin) and Ramesh (Flute).

Smt. Revathy Ramachandran and Smt. Parvathi Ravi Gantasala the dance exponents, chief guests of the arangetram programme have blessed Anupama Iyer.

On 07th January 2011 (Friday) at 6.30 PM. S. Boomika gave very good dance performance . This is her maiden performance at VDS. At 11 she is confident. She is lean and with good limb movements. Foot work also is good. There is scope fo improvement in bhava . Guru Lalitha Ganapathy has trained her very well.

Master piece of the programme was varnam; Banduvarali, Madurai N. Krishnan's Mannum vinnum alandhu. Her foot-work was fine and bhava also good. Male manivanna/Oruthi maganai pirandhu was fine. Thanjai Naalvar's thillana was brisk. Both the costumes were fine.

Music Vocal as well as instrumental was melodious and very supportive to the dancer.
Vocal by Gomathi Nayakam, Thiruvarur Venkatsubramanian (mridangam), Thillai N. muthukumaran (Violin), Papanasam S. Sethuraman (Kanjira) and A.N. Srinivasan (Flute).

Music composer of HMV Recording company Mr. HMV Raghu, chief guest of the programme blessed the dancer.
