VDS Arts Academy - Arts wings of Muthukrishnan Memorial Club

On 4th January 2008 (Friday) at 6.30 PM. N.Saranya, dis. of  S.Shivakumar gave a very good maiden dance performance for VDS. She is brisk with a good fortune. Her bhava is adequate. Limb movements are good. Guru has trained her very well.

Shadaksharam was a difficult piece with intricate intervening jathis which she did well.

Saranya answered the rather unusual kandajaathi jathis of the varnam well. It is evident she has had a good rehearsal.

Other items were rather light. Both music and dance for Kurai ondrum illai was pleasing & soothing. 

Music both vocal and instrumental was very supportive. Especially vocal support by G.Shrikanth, sang with full involvement.Mridangist Suki, veteran violinist Seetharama Sharma and flautist Ramesh rendered their support very well to the dancer.

Saranya was fortunate to have personal blessings from stalwarts like Mrs. Radha, Madurai Mr. R.Muralidharan, chief guests of the evening.    

On 5th January 2008 (Saturday) at 6.30 PM. R.Pavithra Madhuram, daughter & dis. of Mutharasi Ravi gave a very good maiden dance performance for VDS. Her limb mevements  are fine. Foot work is generally good. Guru Mutharasi Ravi has trained her well with motherly affection.

Pavithra Madhuram did the Varnam well, answering the jathis well. Her abhinaya for Bho sambho was brisk, attractive and bhava was good in Nettandhi nerathile.

The selection of the items suited the young dancer.

Music was very supportive to the dancer.


On 6th January 2008 (Sunday) at 6.30 PM. K.Niranthari a student of Vijaya Mukunda did a very good Bharathanatyam performance for VDS.  She is lean, agile, flexible and with good features ideal for a dancer.

Her foot work is brisk, limb movement is elegent. She danced with keen intrest. She kept the zeal & tempo from start to finish (with out usual interval). Guru have trained her very well. Niranthari is very confident at 14.

She did the varnam well answering the jathis perfectly. Abhinaya for Padhni varigudhu was good. Her poser in thillana also good.

Both music & instrumental was soft & pleasing and supportive to the dancer.

Chief guest Radhika Surajith blessed Niranthari. 


On 18th January 2008 (Friday) at 6.30 PM. Nithya Nagarajan, dis. of  Lalitha Ganapathy gave a very good dance performance for VDS. She has ideal features for a dancer, lean, agile, flexible body and a neat foot work & limb movement. Guru Lalitha Ganapathy has trained her well.

She did the varnam well answering the jathies neatly. Her abhinaya for Chinnanchiru penn pole was good.

The costumes were nice and suited the dancer. The items were rather light for the girl’s age and duration of learning.

Music both vocal and instrumental was good and supportive to the dancer. Vocal  by Hariharan, Mridangam Sakthivel, violin by Thillai Muthukumar and flute by Srinivasan.

Nithya was fortunate to have personal blessings from the Bharathanatyam exponent Mrs. Madhuvanthi Arun, Chief guest of the evening.   

On 19th January 2008 (Saturday) at 6.30 PM. S. Sai Keerthana dis.of Suma Mani gave a very good dance performance for VDS.

At 12 she is very confident and enthusiastic, active & agile. Her features are good with expressive eyes. Limb movements are good. Well trained by guru Suma Mani.   

She did Sriman Narayana well depicting dhasavata in a flash. Varnam was good she answered the jathis well. Venkatachala Nilayam was very good with a soothing flute prelude. Both vocal music and dance were fine.

The Costumes were fine and suited the young dancer.

Music, vocal by Chitrambary Krishnakumar, Mridangam by Venkat Subramaniam, violin by M.S.Kannan and flute by Bhagyalakshmi was very supportive to the dancer.

Selection of the items were very light perhaps to suit the little girl. Regular items like jathiswaram, sabdham etc. were missing.


On 20th January 2008 (Sunday) at 6.30 PM. B. Varsha Uma  student of Sheela Unni Krishnan gave a very good & elegant Bharathanatyam performance for VDS. At 12 her confidence is high. She has ideal features for a good dancer, lean, agile, enthusiastic. Her foot work and limb movements are very good. Guru has trained her very well.

The lengthy varnam was good. She answered the jathis well. Her bhava was fine in Navarasa Nilaye. Both music and dance were pleasing in Aadinaye Kanna . Her brisk limb movements were elegant in thillana. Except varnam all other items were light.

Both the costumes were fine and suited the dancer.

The vocal combination of PSBB teachers Kalyani and Rajeswari worked well.The instrumental music, Mridangam by Sakthivel, Violin by Muruganandham and flute by Natrajan also supported the dance well.

Chief guest Mr.Ramjhi, Editor of Makkal Kural (Tamil News Paper) appreciated the academy’s service and blessed Varsha Uma.


On 25th January 2008 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. R. Sai Priya gave a very good vocal concert for VDS. Dis. of Sakunthala Seshadri. Her voice is good clear & versatile. Her paattandhram is good. She renders kritis well. Her guru has trained her well.

The main Bhairavi was good. A She did niraval and kalpanaswarm well. She sang the kriti velava vaa, pahi jaga janani (thukkada) & Lalgudi’s Mohana Kalyani (thillana) melodiously.  

Violinist Shraddha Ravindran and Mridangist K.venkataramanan gave good support.
-At 7.15 PM  S.Praveen & S.Lakshmi Priya dis. of Pathamadai Manisundaram in Key-Board & P.B.Srirangachari in Vocal gave a very good key-board concert for VDS. The tone was good. Fingering was also good. Due to modern innovation, the artists are able to bring out gamakaas and it is supplemented by proper anu-swarams. Otherwise it is difficult to play krithi in ragas like Naatikurunji & Nattai. Their gurus have trained well.

Main Karaharapriya was good. The alapana gennarally good, but there was no continuity in pidis. The kriti chakkaniraja played well. Kalpnaswaram was also good. Brother & Sister affectionately referred to each other for thala.

They played the lone thukkada vilayada idhu neramaa nocely. The mangalam was played melodiously and elaborately.
The accompaniments G.Kirthivasan (Mridangam) S.Krishna (Gatam) supported the main artist well.

On 26th January 2008 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. V.Balakumar gave a very good  vocal concert for VDS. His voice is bold. Trained well by guru Vasanthi Gopal.

Hindolam was good. He sang the main item Ramarama in simmendra madhimam well. The alapana was o.k., But rather plain, lacking in kaarvai & gamakas. He did niraval and kalpanaswaram fairly well.  He has to give pep & weight to the rendition by apt modulation. He sang the thukkadaas nicely.

M.Sukanya the violinist and Thriyambak Prem Chander the mridangist gave a good support to the main artist.
At 7.15 PM. That was an yet another excellent vocal concert by K.Dharini, dis. of Sulochana Pattabiraman. She is our regular artist and this is her 7th concert for VDS. Already recipient of top 10 prize winner in 2005. She is regularly giving concerts in various city sabhas and winning lot of awards and prizes to her credit. Sulochana Pattabiraman has a very good student in her.

Her RTP in keeravani showed her standard. She excels in kalpanaswaram, especially the raagamalika swaram in RTP. Both M.Vijay and S.R.Ethirajan, senior artist in VDS gave fine support and all the three were at their best and enjoyable concert to-day.

She ang the thukkadas nicely.

On 27th January 2008 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. V.V.Bharadwaj dis.of M.E.Subramaniam, rendered a very good  vocal concert. He is very confident. His voice is still not settled. His over all knowledge is good. Still he manages well to sing what he wants. Guru has trained him well.

Main panthuvarali was good The alapana was good. But he must avoid too ambitions in pidis which derail from swarasthanam. He rendered the kriti and kalpanaswaram well. V.Gowri Shankar’s (Mridangam son & dis.of  Tanjore Padma) thani was good. K.J.Dileep’s (Violinist, dis. of M.S.Gopalakrishnan) short essay of Hamsanaadham was good. Bharadwaj’s kalpanaswaram was fine. Husaini song was rendered with raagalakshana. He sang Meerabai bhajan in Misra peelu raagam well.
