Review ( Month of December '09)

On 27th December 2009 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. Vijay Narayanan of New Jersey (USA) presented excellent vocal performance for VDS. His voice is fine, bold and clear. Paatantharam is very good. Guru Ashiwn Bhogendra (formerly known as D. B. Ashwin; who has won thambura prize from VDS in 1998, presently he is training many budding musicians at New Jersey and sending them to perform here at Madras for the music season in all the major sabhas) has trained him very well. Vijay’s confidence, manodharma and imaginations were fine at 16.

His main Keeravani alapana was neat and good. Swaram kalpana has some imaginative pidis. His purvikalyani alapana also good for kriti Aanandha natamaduvar. His lone thukkada Karunai seiyvan (yadukula kambodi) sung melodiously.

H. V. Raghuram on Violin and Arjun Raghavan on Mridangam gave a very good support.

At 7.15 PM. Karthikeyan Ardhanareeswaran gave excellent vocal performance. He is the student of O.S. Thiagarajan and Palghat K. Sridhar. Karthik is from Apex, North California (USA). His voice is soft and versatile. Singing with ragalakshna. Selections of the songs were fine.

Vana veena (kamalamanohari; Narasimha Iyeangar), Vandeham (Hamsadwani; Annamacharya), Sri valli deva senaa (Nata Bhairavi; P. Sivan), Ora jupuda (Kannada gowla; Thiagarajar) all rendered nicely with ragalakshana. His sub-main Kalyana Rama (Hamsanadam; OOthukadu) alapana and swarams were fine and has some nice pidis. Main Shankarabharanam for kriti Manasu swathina, alapana, niraval and swaram had variety. Lone thukkada Yentha vedu has sung beautifully.

H.V. Raghuram (Violin) and R. Santhoshram (mridangam) gave fine support to Karthik.

On 25th December 2009 (Friday) at 6.30 PM. That was Varunika Raja of Sanjose (USA) has performed Excellent Tanjore style of Bharathanatyam for VDS. She is lean and flexible. At just 12 her knowledge & confident is remarkable. Dancing with full involvement. She has good foot-work. Limb movements are fine. Guru Vishal Ramani has trained this little girl very well.

Selection of the items for the programme is very good. Varnam a composition of Lalgudi Jayaraman Devera munivar thozhum in Sahnmugapriya. Varunika’s sanchari bhava was fine both in varnam and Ean palli kondir iyya (mohanam; Arunachalakavirayar) padam. Foot-work was brisk and elegant in Bho sambho and Balamurali’s kunthavarali thillana.

Vocal by Kishore, Sakthivel (mridangam), Veeramani (violin) gave a fine support for the success of the programme.

On 19th December 2009 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. V. Thejas presented excellent vocal performance for VDS. This is his maiden performance. His knowledge and confidence is fine at 12. Rendering the kritis with ragalakshana. His voice is fine, sweet and clear. His voice is flowing over the three octaves easily with fine gamakas and sangathis. He is under the tutelage of his Grandmother-cum-guru Madhavi Rajagopalan. He has also learnt from K.N. Sasikiran and Shreyas Narayanan.

His main Kashirama kriyai alapana was neat and good. Niraval and swaram also good with imaginative pidis. He rendered the other kritis Karimukha varada, Naadha loludai, Sarasa samadhana nicely. He sang the thukkada of Purandaradasar’s Yaadava neeba (Kaapi) beautifully.

Sriram Sridhar on Violin and V. Shreyas on Mridangam gave a very good support.

At 7.15 PM. V. Venkatanagarajan gave yet another excellent vocal performance. He is our regular artist and this is his 4th consecutive excellent performance. He has fine manodharma. Singing with full involvement and ragalakshna. Selections of the songs were fine and all of them were gana ragas and from various major composers. Of course Guru Ambujam Vedantham’s (Trichy) training was remarkable.

Needha mahima (aananda bairavi; Ambujam Vedandham), Vinayaka (Vegavahini; Deekshidar), Sriba priya (Atana; Thiyagarajar), Atharunam (Bhairavi; P. Sivan) all rendered nicely with ragalakshana. His sub-main Evarura (Mohanam) alapana and swarams were fine to listen. Main Rishbapriya for kriti mahimathakinja kovaiyya of saint Thiyagarajar sung very nicely with ragalakshana. All the songs were slower tempo, he could have been added one or two fast kritis. For want of time we missed some nice thukkadas.

Both Dineshkumar (Violin) and R. Srinivas (mridangam) gave fine support to venkat.

11th December 2009 (Friday) at 6.30 PM. B. Amirthavarshini gave a very good Bharathanatyam performance. She is lean with flexible body. Hence her limb movements were fine to watch. Bhava as she is just 11 year old child artist, there is scope of improvement. She is well trained by Guru Lalitha Ganapathi.

Amirthavarshini’s Shadaksharam (Shanmukapriya; Madurai. R. Muralidharan) was the best piece of the programme. Varnam in lathangi was good. Both the padams were fine, one on lord Aiyappa (Aanandabhairavi) and other on Lord Krishna (Paarvai ondre podhume; suruti, Oothukadu Venkata Subbaier). Swadhi Thirunal’s Danashree thillana has brisk foot-work.

Vocal by Amirdavarsha, Sakthivel (mridangam) & A.N. Srinivasan (Flute) rendered their very good support to the dancer.

The Bharathanatyam exponent Smt. Madhumathi Prakash, chief guest of the programme blessed Amirtha.

On 06th December 2009 (Sunday) at 6.30 PM. Gayathri Sudarshan performed a fine and very good Bharathanatyam performance for VDS. She is 13 and this is her maiden solo performance. She has fine knowledge and good confidence. She is lean and flexible. Her movements are fine. Guru R. Vijay Madhavan has trained her very well.

Her sanchari bhava was fine both in varnam, Swami Naan undhan adimai (naataikurunji; P. Sivan) and in padam Ramachandram bhavayami (Vasantha; M. Deekshidar). Her foot work was brisk and fine for Theeradha Villayattu pillai and Chandra gouns thillana. Her bhava was good in Hanuman Saleesa (Ragamalika; Tulsidasar).
