Review ( Month of December '08)

On 28th December 2008 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. Sitara Niranjan gave a fine & very good vocal concert for VDS. Her voice is fine & melodious in the higher octave. Below sadjamam hoarse. At just 11 her sruthi, layam, rendering kritis, kalpanaswarams and all round knowledge were o.k., But she has to improve alapana. Guru Radha Narayanan has trained her very well.

Selection of the songs were good from different composers. Sahana varnam, Gajananayutham (Chakravaham), Muruga (Saveri) were fine. Sub-main Poorvikalyani and main Bhairavi both the alapanas were good. Kritis Paralokasa and Upachaaramu were rendered nicely with perfect muthaippu swarams. She sang Hindolam thillana nicely. 

N. Sanjay (Violin) and Arthavan Selvanathan from Australia (Mridangam) gave a very good support to Sitara.

At 7.15 PM. D. Karthika Anagha from Hyderabad gave an excellent vocal concert and it was marked by high standard in her sweet and shrill voice with wide range. She even touched the Top Sa.  Her all round knowledge and rendaring of kritis were fine. She is learning under the tutelage of Neela Ramgopal at Bangalore and Raghavachari of Hyderabad Bros. at Hyderabad .

Afetr fine rendering of Navaragamalika Varnam, Nenarunchara (Simhavahini) and Niravathi Sugatha she sang her sub-main Pantuvarali alapana, kriti Rama dasar’s Ennaganu with fine kalpanaswarams. After a neat alapna in main Shankarabaranam, she rendered Shyama Satris Saroja Dalanethri very well with fine niraval and variety of kalpana swarams. She sang the thukkadas melodiously. 

Violinist Shraddha Ravindran and Mridangist V. Vignesh gave a fine support to Karthika.

On 27th December 2008 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. Skanda Prasad from New Jersy (US) gave a good vocal concert . Son and Dis. of Dr. Bhavani Prakash. His saariram is good and childish at10. Singing kritis with raagalakshana.
 
Started with Sankaraparanam Varnam and followed by Gajavadana, Pandhana Micchite (Bilahari) Hel sang nicely. He sang the kriti Lalithe (Bhairavi) very well with raagalakshana. Devi neeye thunai (keeravani) was good. Main Kalyani was o.k., Alapana was in bits. Sang the kriti Eta Vunara very well 
 
Violinist Shraddha and Mridangist Ananda Pamanabha (Brother of Skanda) gave adequate support.

At 7.15 PM. Sruthi Sarathy and Jayshree Sarathy ( from California)  justified their being allotted senior slot in the very first concert at VDS by their excellent vocal duet rendered in their melodious and clear voice. Their confidence is of high order at 14 & 12. They are singing in one voice, rendering kritis with fine bhava and ragalakshana. Guru Anuradha Sridhar; daughter of Lalgudi Brhmanandham has trained them very well.
 
Selection of songs was fine, Muthia Bagavathar,s Gan Ganapate (Hamsadwani), Thiyagarajar’s Ksheerasgara (Devagandhari), Shyama Sastris marivere gati ( Ananda Bhairavi) and Niravathi sukha (Ravichandrika) were rendered beautifully. Sruthi’s Kamboji (sub-main) was good with innovative pidis in alapana. they sang the kriti Maa janaki very well with crisp niraval and swarams. Little Jayashree,s Haimavathy; main alapana was astonishing. They sang the Deekshitar’s Sri Kanthimathim kriti very well. Kalapanaswarams were o.k., They rendered kamas thillana melodiously.
 
Violinist K.J. Dileep and Mridangist Rajna Swaminathan gave a fine support. In fact the Lalgudi, Parur (MSG) and Umayalpuram patterns were visible in the concert.

On 26th December 2008 (Friday) at 6.30 PM. Sharanya Balaji of California (USA) gave a very good and attractive Bharathanatyam performance for VDS. She is just 10. Her confidence, involvement, keen interest and dedication every thing was fine with good foot-work and elegant limb movements ; full credit goes to guru Vishal Ramani (Tanjore style of Bhrathanatyam) who has trained this little girl very well.

Varnam was a full length and she did about one hour with lot of episodes. The varnam Rangan Charanam in Brindavana Saranga and a difficult pattern of khanda jathi Ata Thalam, composed by Ashok Subramaniam, a vocalist from California. The Sanchari Bhava episodes were too many for a varnam. Sharanya answered the jathis of the varnam set to a difficult thala pattern very well. Lalgudi’s Mand thillana also fine. She did not show even a glimpse of tiredness till then.

Both vocal and instrumental was very fine and very supportive to the dance. Vocal by Murali Parthasarathy (recipient of Best vocal accompanying artist award for dance from our VDS ARTS Academy in 2008) Veda krishnan (Mridangam), Srilakshmi Venkatramani (Violin)

On 20th December 2008 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. Varun Ganesan (New Jersy) gave an  Excellent maiden vocal concert for VDS. His voice is bold & clear (manly). All round knowledge is good. Singing with keen interest. Dis. of  Ashwin Bogendra (Dis.of PSN).
                            
His Dharmavathy alapana was good. Kriti Vasudevachar’s Bhajana Seya Radha was rendered neatly. Kalpanaswaram was fluent. Main Kambodi was fine. The alapana had many innovative pidis. Niraval was lengthy. Kalpanaswarams had well-knit pattern. He sang  Thyagarajr’s  O ranga sayee  nicely. He has to use modulation while singing.
 
Sandeep N. Bharadwaj (Violin) and S. Gomathy Shankar (Mridangam) gave a very good support to Varun.

Here a special mention about this week : this week is NRI week for VDS. All the four participants from United States got Excellent grade based on their meritorious and fantastic performances here at VDS.

On 19th December 2008 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. Arthi Suresh from New Jersy performed   Excellent maiden vocal concert for VDS. At 14 her all round knowledge is fine. Singing  the kritis with ragalakshana. Her voice is bold and clear especially in the higher octave. Learning under the tutelage of Seetha Narayanan at Chennai and Rajeswari Sathish at US.. .
                            
Both Dharmavathi and Thodi are difficult ragas for children to handle but she did both the ragas fluently and neatly. Her niraval and kalpanaswaram were also good and well prepared.  She sang the kritis Dikshitar’s Paranthamavathy and Papanasam Sivan’s Thanigai valar nicely.  
 
New Comer Sandeep N. Bharadwaj, Violinist  also from U.S. and K.H. Vineeth (Mridangam) gave a very good support to Arthi

 At 7.15 PM. Shyamala Ramakrishna also from New Jersy gave yet another excellent vocal concert for VDS. It was promotional concert for one and half hour senior slot. She deserved it. Her voice is bold, clear and easy flowing (reminds of P.A. Periyanayaki) Her patantharam is fine. Mother-cum-guru Rajeswari Sathish ( PSN School ) has trained her very well with care.
 
Shyamala handled Natakapriya deftly. Alapana, Mysore Vasudevachar’s Idhi Samayamu kriti, niraval, swaram every thing was fine. Main Simhendramadhymam was fine.. Alapana, niraval and kalpana swarams were good for kriti nine nammithi and fine reply by Violinist K.P. Haricharan and also fine thani by Rajna Swaminathan ( US girl; Mridangam) and all the three  made the concert an enjoyable one..

On 13th December 2008 (Saturday) at 6.30 PM. N. Gayathri gave a fine and very good  Bharathanatyam performance. Our regular artist, performing for 4th time at VDS. She is   dis. of N. Shrikanth.

Her ghambira nattai pushpanjali was good. Dttatreya the bhava oriented padma was fine. Her foot-work, bhava, nritta were fine in Lalgudi’s Ragamalika varnam. She did Kalyana Rama (Hamsanadham), Maa Ramana (Hindolam) and Lalgudi’s mohana kalyani thillana very well.

Vocal by Nandhini Anand, Mridangam by Veda Krishnan and Violin by Kalayarasan rendered good support to gayathri.

Barathanatyam Exponent Kalaimamani Smt. N. Rhadha chief guest of the programme blessed Gayathri.

On 12th December 2008 (Friday) at 6.30 PM. Dhivya Malayappan gave an excellent Bharathanatyam performance for VDS. She is our regular artist. This is her fourth performance here. She has improved in all departments over her previous performances. She is lean, tall and agile. Her abhinaya, foot- work, elegant limb movements, bhava every thing was fine. Guru Kalaimamani Tanjore Rajalakshmi has trained her very well.

Misra alarippu was good. Her sanchari bhava was fine Nirvana Shatakam (Yeman Kalyani) was fine. Her foot-work was very brisk and limb movements and abhinaya were fine in Thandhai Thai (Shanmuga priya) padam and Aarabi Varnam (Anname). Kannanai Kanbathepo (Ragamalika) and Dhanshree Thillana also very good.Vocal and instrumental support for the dance was fine.

On 07th December 2008 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM. S. Sankaran & S. Balasubramanian gave a  good maiden vocal (duet) concert for VDS. Their voice is bold but not refined.  They rendered the kritis fairly well. Their confidence is adequate. They have to listen more and more seniors concerts for modulations every thing. Guru A.P. Komala has to take more care on them.

Selection of the songs were good from different composers. Varnam Sarasooda in Saveri was good in three speeds. Their Vallabha (begada), Siva Siva (banduvarali), Amba Para Devadhe (rudra priya) all sang well. Main Mohanam alapana was better, kriti Kadmabari Priyayai sang nicely. Poorvikalyani thillana was o.k.,  

B. Sudha (Violin) and R. Santhosh Ram (Mridangam) gave a very good support.

At 7.15 PM. S. Girijashankar’s yet another excellent vocal concert was marked by a very good all round knowledge, good manodharma and fine rendering of kritis. He sings with raagalakshana and bhava. His gurus Chitraveena Narasimhan and Ravikiran have trained him very well.

His lathangi was very good. After a short & crisp alapana he rendered kriti Venkata ramana very well. Main thodi was fine with innovative pidis in alapana he sang the kriti kaarthigeya very well with crisp niraval and variety of kalpana swarams. He sang the thukkadas melodiously.

Violinist M. Vijay’s reply in thodi was smooth and fine. Mridangist Srivanchiam Sriram and Kanjeera by K.H. Vineeth played attractive thani. The double thambura added more attraction for the concert.
