Review ( Month of August '08)

On 31st August 2008 (Sunday) at 6.30 PM. V. Bhargavi a dis. of  Anusha Narendrakumar and Narendrakumar (dance couples) gave a very good Bharathanatyam performance for VDS. Maiden solo performance at VDS. Her foot work is good. Limb movements are elegant. She is lean and flexible. Gurus have trained her very well.

She did Madurai R.Muralidharan’s Konjum Salangai (lathangi) varnam well & answered the jathis neatly and enacted the Sancharibhava very well. Her bhava is good and there is scope of improvement. Maamavathu sri saraswathy in Hindolam is very slower tempo. The choreography for Mahishasuramardhini was fine. She did the Shanmugapriya thillana well.

Vocal by Gireesh Menon, Sakthi Vel (Mridangam), Bhavani Prasad (Veena) rendered their good support. But the absence of violin the vocalist felt tired and he did not cover the lyrics.

A huge number of audience gathered and enjoyed the nice programme.

On 30th August  (Saturday) at 6.30 PM. That was an excellent dance performance by Varsha Ramachandran for VDS. She has fine features, flexible body, elegant limb movements and a nice foot-work. Guru Sheela Unnikrishnan has trained this  little dancer very well. It was a full-fledged programme for a 13 year old girl. Which she did performed very well.

Varsha was very brisk and agile while dancing the jathis; that was evident in the  varnam Meenakshi thaaye (Simhendramadhymam). Her sanchari bhava was also fine in the varnam. Alaarippu though simplified was good. Tharangam dance was attracted the large number of audience gathered and blessed the child. Her abhinaya was good in Omnamo Narayana (Karnaranjani) .

Vocal by duo Rajeswari Kumar & Kalyani Kalyanaraman, Nagai Narayanan (Mridangam) and Muruganandham (Violin; recipient of Best accompanying artist for dance awarded by our VDS ARTS Academy for the year 2006) and Pathanjali (flute) rendered their fine support.

Mrs.Kavitha Raman (Bharatahanatyam Exponent), chief guest of the programme blessed Varsha.

On 29th August 2008 (Friday) at 6.30 PM. N.Priyanka a student of Himaja Ramsharan gave a very good performance of Bharathanatyam for VDS. She has good features and neat foot-work. At 13 she is very confident. Guru has trained her very well.

She did the Navaragamalika Varnam (Swamiyai Azhaithodivaa) composed by K.N.Dhandayuthapani Pillai well. Her foot-work was good and did the jathis neatly. Her abhinaya for Adhuvum Solluval (Padam) was good. She did Bho sambho, Jawali, Brahmamokade well. The Hindolam thillana was very neat, brisk and nice. Both music and dance synchronized well. Her limb movements were a bit rigid. Her bhava was just adequate. Of course she will improve as she grows up. Finally the mangalam (Ksheerabdi in kuranji) was lengthier and very nice.

Bharatahanatyam Exponent Mrs. Sudha Vijayakumar, chief guest of the evening programme blessed Priyanka

 

On 24th August 2008 (Sunday) at 6.30 PM. S. Chethna and dis. of  Mutharasi Ravi gave a very good dance performance for VDS. Maiden solo performance by this little 11 year old girl. She is very confident,She has  flexible limb movements and good foot-work. Guru has trained her very well with special care.

She did Padmashree K.N.Dhandayuthapani Pillai’s Annayai maravenadi varnam well & answered the jathis well. Of course there is scope of improvement in bhava,  . Her dance for Sri Chakra Raja was fine. She did Saraswathy sabdham, Idadhu padam thooki & pancharathina thillana well.

Vocal by V.Venugopal (recipient of Best Vocal artist for dance awarded by VDS for 2007), Arcot S. Balaji (Mridangam), Cholapuram V. Shankar (Violin) rendered their good support.

On 22nd August 2008 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. P.Sreevidhya dis.of  Radha Parthasarathy gave a very good and fine vocal concert for VDS. Her saareeram is fine, soft and sweet. She renders krithis well.
                                                                                    
Her Poorvikalyani (sub-main)  gnanamusakaradha was good. The alapana was short but crisp. The kriti and kalpanaswarams were good. Main latahangi was good. The alapana was also good but it was very fast. She has to develop step by step alapana. Rendered the kriti aparadhamulu well. Kalpanaswaram was o.k. She sang Padhamethunai (Valachi) & Dhanashree thillana very well.

R.Priyamvadha (Violin), New comer P.V.Srivathsa (Mridangam-brother of the vocalist), S.Sri Sainath (Gatam) rendered their good support.

Chief Guest of the programme Mr. Shreyas Narayanan blessed the youngsters.

At 7.15 PM. That was yet another excellent vocal concert by S.Ramakrishnan Murthy of California (US) for VDS. He is our regular artist. Singing from 2003 for sixth consecutive year. His concert was marked by a good all round knowledge, excellent manodharma and full utilization of a versatile voice. Learning under the tutelage of Guru Padma Kutty at US., he also got some fine tuning from Vaikom Jayachandran, Delhi Sundararajan and Neyveli Santhanagopalan.

Though Harikambodhi alapana had some nice pidis, he did not stay on any swarams and glided very fast. Infact niraval was lengthier than alapana and kriti put together. The Kalpanaswaram was fine. Vasantha  bhairavi and bilahari kritis were rendered well. Main Saveri was nice. Here he did the alapana neatly and developed step by step. There was imaginative pidis. Rendered the kriti well. Niraval and swarams were fine. There was variety in it.

Violinist Sangeetha Baskara Sudha R.S.Iyer, Mridangist Laya Baskara V.Prashanth gave a very good support to Ramakrishnan Murthy. In fact all the three young artists gave a nice concert.

On 17th August  (Sunday) at 6.30 PM. That was an excellent dance performance by G.V.Subashini for VDS. This is her maiden solo performance at 20. She has ideal features for a dancer. Tall, lean, flexible body, graceful limb movements and her foot-work also good. Guru Sai Krupa Prasanna also new to VDS, has trained this dancer very well.

Subashini’s limb movements in the jathiswaram was graceful. She did K.N.Dhandayutha pani’s raagamalika varnam well & answered the jathis neatly. She did other items Thulsidas bhajan, Jawali, Thillana (Natabairavi) well.

Vocal by Chitrambari Krishnakumar, S.Nagaraj (Mridangam) and Devarajan (flute) rendered a fine support.

Mrs.Sushma Ranganathan (Bharatahanatyam Exponent), chief guest of the programme blessed Subashini.

On 16th August 2008 (Saturday) at 6.30 PM. R.Aarthi a student of  R.Vijay Madhavan gave a very good dance performance for VDS. She is tall, lean, flexible, bends, easily. Her foot-work is also good. Guru has trained her very well.

She did the Bhairavi Varnam for Nandhagopalanai very well and answering the jathis neatly. Her abhinaya for Devi neeye thunai (Padam) was good. She did the sanchari bhava well. Aarthi dances with keen intrest. There was some fire works near our dance venue due some function and it was like in Thillana Mohanambal, she did not lose her concentration and danced smoothly.
 
Youngster R.Narayanan (Vocal; he is our VAA TOP TEN prize winner in 2007), Ramanaa (Mridangam), Veteran Seetharama Sharma (Violin) & Gokul (Flute) rendered their support very well.

Bharatahanatyam Exponent Mrs. Lakshmi Ramaswami, chief guest of the evening programme blessed Aarthi.

On 10th August 2008 (Sunday) at 6.30 PMR. Vignesh and R.Shruthi children and  dis. of Sasirekha Rammohan gave a very good and fine dance performance for VDS. Vignesh is just eleven and Shruthi is just eight. Dancing  confidently like senior artists  they  went on to complete the programme successfully with a smiling face. Full credit goes to mother-cum-guru Sasirekha Rammohan.

The siblings did Madurai Krishna Iyangar’s Amba Akhilandeswari varnam very well. Taking the positions alternately and together is difficult  which  they did effortlessly. They also answered the jathis well. Shruthi’s bhava and sancharibhava both in varnam and Oothukadu Venkatasuba Iyer’s Vishamakara Kanna (padam) were fine. In snake dance we wondered whether Shruthi was made of rubber. The final item of the programme was Laya Chakravarthi Guru Karaikudi Mani’s Laya Kavidhai which  was different and . the large number of audience mainly  children  enjoyed very much.
The itens were made light to suit the little dancers.
Fine rendering of vocal by Kuldeep M.Pai alongwit Veda Krishnan (Mridangam), Shikamani (violin) and Srinivasan (Flute) gave a fine support to Vignesh and Shruthi.

Bharathanatyam Exponent, Nruthia Choodamani Smt. Priyadharshini Govind, chief guest of the evening blessed the children.

On 09th August 2008 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. Arul Priya Manikavasagam gave an excellent vocal concert for VDS. Regular artist and this is her 4th concert at VDS. She has been improving concert by concert. Voice is clear and melodious with bregas and gamakas. Her over all knowledge is high at 15. Durga Venkatesh (guru) of Dubai has trained this little girl very well.

Siddhivinayakam in shanmugapriya was good. Malayamaarutham alapana was good.
Main lathangi was good. After a neat alapana she rendered the kriti Dhanyudevado well with very good niraval and kalpanaswarams. She rushed through all songs

R.Shyam on Violin and R. Akshay Ram on Mridangam rendered their good support.

At 7.15 PM: Anirudh Venkatesh’s (from California) yet another vocal concert was marked by good manodharma, fine rendering of kritis and well built kalpanaswarams. He sings with raagalakshana. His pattantharam is very good; guru P.S.Narayanaswami iyer has trained him very well. This student from US is  learning with keen interest and dedication.

His alapana of both Haimavathi and Madhyamavathi was fine. He developed step by step with fine pidis. He sang the kriti Ramakatha well. Niraval and kalpanaswarams were also good. Since he could not keep up time, we missed some thukkadas. The lone thukkada in Bagesri was fine.

He was ably supported by R.Shyam (Violin) & Tanjore K.Praveenkumar (Mridangam).

On 08th August 2008 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. US based Aamani Mynampati (New-Jersey) dis.of  Uma Prabhakar gave a very good and fine vocal concert for VDS. Her voice is nice, soft and versatile. She sang the concert through out with smiling face. Gurus Uma Prabhakar (Maayavaram Sisters) at Chennai and Dr.K.Vagish at US have  trained her very well. Aamani is bold and confident.

Her Sriranjani (sub-main) for kriti Parvatha Rajakumari was good. Panthuvarali,:- the alapana was neat but it was rendered very fast. Kriti Sambho Mahadeva was sung  well, though the kalpanaswaram was short. Main Shankarabharanam:- it was rapid alapana with good pidis with lot of brugas. She rendered the niraval and swaram very well.

K.P.Nandini’s (Violin) essay of Shankarabharanam was good. New comer Harsha Kannumalla’s  (Mridangam-also from US), thani avardhanam was good.

Chief Guest of the programme Flute maestro Dr. N.Ramani and guest of honour Clevland Mr.V.V.Sundaram blessed the young artists.


At 7.15 PM. R.Narayanan,s vocal concert was marked by good ragalakshana and fine rendering of kritis. He is our regular artist and this is his 4th concert and first promotional concert to senior slot to one and half hour. He proved worthy of the promotion by his very good and fine concert. Learning under the tutelage of Guru Seerkazhi R.Jayaraman.

Thulasidala in maayamala gowla was good. His lathangi alapana was good; he rendered the kriti marivere very well. His alapana of Bhairavi was fine. It had some nice pidis. He rendered the kriti Sri Viswanatham baje well with niraval and swarams. At 16 his manodharma is high.

Violinist Sudha R.S.Iyer, Mridangist G.Kirthivasan and Gatam by Chidambaram G.Prashanth gave a very good support to Narayanan. In fact all the four young artists gave a nice concert.

On 03rd August 2008 (Sunday) at 6.30 PM. That was yet another excellent dance performance by Sumitra Subramanian. Daughter and dis. of Jayanthi Subramanian. She is our regular artist and this is her third performance for VDS. She has ideal features for a dancer, tall, agile, flexible, nimble feet and elegant movement of limbs.

She did the varnam well & answered the jathis neatly. Her bhava was fine in Chinnan chiru kiliye (padam). She has won prize (Natarajar Statue) for top artist in the year 2006. at VDS.  The selection of items indicated that more importance was given to bhava than nruttham.

Nandhini Anand (vocal) , Nellai D.Kannan (Mridangam), Kandadevi S.Vijayaraghavan (Violin) rendered their good support.
