Reviews - April 2009

On 26th April 2009 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM . That was an excellent vocal concert by Raksha Mahalingam.. She is our regular artist. This is her 5th concert for VDS. We see a lot of improvement over her previous concerts. She renders kritis very well with her fine and versatile voice also with fine gamakas and brugas. Guru Padma Chandilyan has trained her very well.

Selection of items were fine. Patnam Subramanya Iyer’s Pagawari varnam. Swathi thirunal’s Gopalaka in Revagupthi. Saint Thigarajar’s Sripathe (Nagaswaravali). Her sub-main Bairavi ( kriti Chinthayamam of M’ dikshidar) was rendered nicely. Main Simhendramdhymam alpana was good. She sang the kriti Rama Rama of Swathithirunal nicely with ragalakshana and fine kalpanaswarams. Her thukkadas Gopalkrishna Bharathi’s Irakam Varamal (Behag), Periasami Thooran’s Muralidhara (Maand) and Poorvi Thillana of Thirukokaranam Swaminataha iyer were good..

B. Sudha on Violin and P. V. Srivatsa on Mridangam gave a good support.

On 25th April 2009 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM . M. G. Harish gave a fine & very good vocal performance. His voice is soft and fine at higher octave. There is scope of improvement in madulations and below sadjamam, . Guru Shyamala Balasubramanian has trained him very well.

Bhairavi varnam, Jaya Jaya swamin (Nattai), Danyadevadu (Malaiyamarutham) and Brovabarama (Bahudari) everything was fine. His main Keeravani alapana, niraval and Kalpanaswarams were good for kriti Ambavani.. Thukkadas Yadava and Sensuruti thillana were also good.

Sraddha on Violin and Veni Madhavan on Mridangam gave adequate support.

Vidhushi Smt. Prema Hariharan, chief guest blessed the young musicians..

At 7.15 PM. K. Lakshmi’s yet another Excellent Vocal performance was noted by fine manodharma with her fluent, melodious and soft voice. Her all round knowledge is high.. She has been trained very well by her gurus Dr. Manjula Sriram and Padma Chandilyan.

Lakshmi’s Brindavana saranga (sub-main) was very good.. She sings with full involvement and dedication. Alapna, niraval and swarams were fine to listen for kriti Soundrarajam of Dikishithar. Main thodi had inovative pidis in alapana Krithi; Thiagarajar’s Koluvamaregada Kalpanaswaramas had variety. Her Jagadodharana in piloo ragam was remarkable and the most attractive piece of todays concert. Velane Sivabalane in behag and Ragesri Thillana of Lalgudi were fine.

Shraddha Ravindran (Violin) and Srivanchiam R. Sriram (Mridangam) gave a wonderful support to Lakshmi.

On 24th April 2009 (Friday) at 6.00 PM. R. Saipriya performed an Excellent Vocal concert for VDS, a student of Sakunthala Seshadri. This is her 3rd concert and lot of improvement seen over her previous concerts. Her voice is sweet and fine. She sings krithis well.

In suddha dhanyasi, a difficult and different varnam was sung perfectly. Vachaspathi alapana was good, the kriti Pahi jagadjanani sung very well. Arumo Aaval in mand was fine. Main Karaharapriya was good. Alapana had nice pidis. She did fine niraval and kalpanaswarams for kriti Pakkala. Swathi thirunal’s poorvi thillana was sung very nicely.

Violinist B. Sudha and Mridangist K. Venkataramanan gave a good support to Saipriya.

At 7..15 PM. N. Jayakrishnan gave an excellent vocal concert. He has very good knowledge at kalpanaswarams. Guru Neyveli R. Santhanagopalan has trained him very well.

His Nattaikurinji alapana was fine for kriti Mamavasada with fine swarams. Main keeravani was also fine. Alapana had good pidis. Kriti Vaananai was fine with swarams. His other items Behag varnam, Saint Thiagarajar’s Ganamurthe, Azhimazhai Kanna in Varaali, Vidajaladura in Janaranjani all rendered with full involvement.

R. Rahul (Violin) & V. Gowrishankar (Mridangam) gave fine support.

On 19th April 2009 (Sunday) at 6.30 PM. That was a fine and very good dance performance by J. Priyadharshini. She is very confident.

Foot-work is good. Bhava and limb movements are o.k. Guru Latha Ravi has trained her very well. It was a full-fledged programme.

Pushpanjali, Alarippu, Thanjai Naalvar’s Jathiswaram (Chakravaham) and Swathi Thirunal composition of Shabdham all were fine.

Varnam a composition of Sri. Subudu, Anname arugil vaa (Valachi) was good, she answered the intricate jathis well. Bhava was very good forThottu Thottu (Behag) padam The brisk dance for Siva Sakthi was fine.

She was very agile through out. It was fine to see a lot of her
co-students have attended,encouraged and enjoyed Priyadharshini’s performance.

Bharathiyar’s Thakka Thakka (Siva Sakthi ragam) and Oothukadu
Venkatasubbaiar’s Gambiranattai Thillana were also good..

The vocal & instrumental music was good and very supportive to the dancer. Vidyashankar (vocal), Dhananjayan (mridangam), Cholapuram V. Shankar (violin) and Shankaranarayanan (Flute).

Chief guest Mrs. Rajshree Vasudevan, a dance exponent blessed Varsha.

On 18th April 2009 (Saturday) at 6.30 PM. Ananathasri Sailapathy gave a very good Bharathanatyam performance for VDS. Learning under the tutelage of Thanjai A. Hemanath. This is Ananthasri’s 3rd performance at VDS. She has improved considerably in foot-work and limb movements.

She has lean and agile body to accommodate flexible movements. There is still scope of improvement in bhava, she is just 12. So far she has completed 50 programmes at this young age.

Started with traditional pushpanjali and followed by Ganapthiye
varuvai, Netasa gowthuvam and kaalai thooki (Bhagesri) every thing was o.k. She answered the jathis of the varnam, Papanasam Sivan’s Swami nan unthan adimai (Nattaikurinji) neatly. Kanakadasar’s Yaadhavaraya (Ragamalika) padam was also very good. Dr. Balamurali’s Kadhanakuthukalam thillana was very nice to watch.

Vocal support of Kaveri, Ganesan (mridangam) and Akkarai Murugan (violin) was good.

On 12th April 2009 (Sunday) at 6.00 PM . V. V. Bharadwaj gave a very good vocal performance. His voice is versatile. His knowledge is good. He is good at Kalpanaswarams. Sings kritis very well. Guru M.E. Subramania Iyer has taught the kritis very well.

Selection of items was fine and from different vaageyakaras. Veenai Kuppaiyer’s Begada varnam, Koteeswaraiyer’s Vaaranamugavaa (Hamsadwani), Periaswami dhooran’s Samaganapriye (Anandha Bhairavi) and Sree Jalandhara (Mysore Maharaja Saamrat) in Gambiranaatai- all rendered nicely. Main Charukesi alapana was short and good. He sang the kriti Krupaiya of Swathi thirunal Maharaj very well. His kamboji also good - Muthuswami Deekshidar’s Maragathavalli. Sri Thiagarajar’s Manasuloni (Karnataka Hindolam)was also good. The lone thukkada in Desh Solla Vallayo was also good.

B. Sudha on Violin and G. Karthik on Mridangam gave a very good support.

At 7.15 PM. It is promotional concert to one and half hour slot for Adithya Mohan . He did it very well .

He is very good in kalpanaswarams with good combination.of swaras. His gurus Sethu Mahadevan of Kalakshetra and N.Ravikiran have trained him very well. He sang all the kritis well. Andavane in Shanmugapriya, alapana and kriti were fine. He rendered Bhavanutha in mohanam neatly. Main Bhairavi was very good. The alapana had innovative pidis. Kriti Yaro Ivaryaro was good. Kalpanaswaram had variety. He sang the thukkadas Mariyameni (Kanada) and Theeradha Vilayattupillai (Ragamalika) very nicely.

C.K. Vijayaraghavan (Violin) and Thiruvarur S.C. Venkatesh (Mridangam) gave a fine support to Adithya.

On 11th April 2009 (Saturday) at 6.00 PM. Ramya Ramesh performed a very good Key-Board recital at VDS, a student of Chandrasekar , she also learnt from her father S. Ramesh. Tonal quality of the instrument is good. Playing kritis with proper anuswarams, but still to improve playing the alapana.

Ramya’s Mohanam alapana was good, she played the kriti Kapaali very well. Kalpanaswaram was o.k. Main Hindolam alapana was very good. She played the kriti Ramanukku very nicely with niraval and swarams. She played the thukkadas Thamari pootha ( Hindustani Gandhari) and Dhanasri Thillana of Swathi thirunal very nicely.

Violinist Bhooma and Mridangist R. Siva Subramanian and Gatam S. Sri Sainath gave a very good support to Ramyaa.

At 7..15 PM. `BAALA BASKARA’ K. Bharathsundar a student of P.S. Narayanaswami Iyer and Leelavathy Gopalakrishnan gave yet another Excellent vocal concert. This is his seventh concert at VDS. We are happy that the three senior artists of VDS, Bharath Sundar, R. Rahul (Violin) and S.R. Ethirajan (Mridangam) who have established them selves among the music circle, gave an inspiring and fine concert . Bharathsundar excelled in alapana, having full control over the raga Kamas, indulging effortlessly in stuthi bedham illusioning with yaman kalyani. He sang the kriti Brocheva (Mysore Vasudhevachar) with innovativesangathis . Bharath has been moulded very well by his gurus. His handling of urmika raga for Pallavi Seshaiyer’s Endhanivina was also fine. In Gowri manohari kriti Gurulekha, alapana and swaram were fine. He sang the thukkadas Swathi thirunal’s Jamuna ki naare and Lalgudi’s Maand thillana also superbly..

On 05th April 2009 (Sunday) at 6.30 PM. S. Varsha’s Bharathanatyam performance was marked by elegant and perfect limb movements, excellent foot work and her features are ideal for a dancer. She is very confident and sure. She is learning under the tutelage of Sujatha Mohan; school of Dr. Padma Subramaniam .

Varsha’s Kanna Karmegavanna (simaaaendra Madhimam), varnam a composition of Ranganayaki Jayaraman was good. She answered the jathis neatly. The sancharibhava was also good. Shiva thandavam (Madurai R. Muralidharan; Ragamalika) was the best piece of to day's programme. With her flexible body she made different positions of karanas effortlessly. The left and right side combinations were perfect. There is scope of improvement in bhava. Pudukottai Vaidynatha Iyer’s Dhrupad a different thillana and Kavadi chindu were good to watch. Both the costumes were fine and suited the dancer.

Sashidharan (vocal), Nagai Narayanan (mridangam), Sikkil Balasubramanian (violin) and Aneesh Mohan (key-board) gave very good.support.

On 04th April 2009 (Saturday) at 6.30 PM. J. Aparajitha gave an Excellent Bharathanatyam performance for VDS.She is learning under the tutelage of Ratheesh Krishna of Kalakshetra, who has trained her very well.

Aparajitha has good features for a dancer. She has good foot work, flexible body movements and dancing with full involvement. Bhava is still to improve, she is just 14. Her Pushpanjali, Thodyamangalam and ganapathi sthuthi everything was good. Her sanchari bhava was fine both in Papanasam Sivan’s Maayam Eno Swami (Mayamala Gowla) varnam and Purandaradasar’s Jagadhotharana (Kaapi) padham. Both music and dance were fine in Jayadhevar Ashtapathi. Master piece of to-day’s programme was Kutchupudi - Tharangam. Madurai N Krishnan’s Brindavana Saranga thillana was the fitting finale.

The vocal support of Cochin Arun Krishnan was fine, Suri Upendra Narasimhan (mridangam) and Paakala Jaya Prakash (violin) gave good support.
